"Churches would be more popular if they stopped 'banging on' about God"

Sir Simon Jenkins says
And that's not from the Onion.
quote:
Cathedrals are doing better than churches because they don't "bang on" about God, Sir Simon Jenkins has suggested.
The author, who was discussing his new book on England's churches at the Hay Festival, said cathedrals were responding to the public's desire for a more spiritual and less religious experience.
Considering the popularity of Cathedrals among the public he said, "there's something about cathedrals that draws you in which is not being drawn into parish churches.
And that's not from the Onion.

Churches would be more popular if they got rid of the disingenuous people that frequent them.
Religion has never been the issue, it's the people that make it insufferable.

Aren't cathedrals just big churches?

Why the anchor? This is just mocking a guy who says that churches would be more popular if they didn't serve their only purpose.

I come alive at Love Alive Church in Baton Rouge. And they're expanding. Coming to Mid-City next.
It's a breath of fresh air. Passor Renaldo keeps it real. Doesn't just talk about the message of Jesus. Brings up real issues that are prevalent in our community, along with Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, mixed in with live music.
It's like Healing Place, but not everyone is hurting at Love Alive.

I thought Joel Oesteen already had the market corned here.
Seriously though. If people don't care about Jesus, then just call what you are doing a self help group and stop doing it in the name of some religion or spirituality. You won't hurt the feelings of people who hold orthodox Christian faith. No need to tear ours down to have yours. Oh and true Christians realize they are sinners and still mess stuff up. If you go to church and stare at the people there, then you are missing the point. It is Jesus that the church should point you to--not the members.

Yes, and no.
I realize I'm dousing the fire of an already anchored thread.
Cathedral IS a big church, that is the seat of a (Arch)diocese/bishopric/see.
Inside is the "cathedra" or (Arch)Bishop's chair/throne which is the sign and main place where he exercises authority.
When he speaks on matters of doctrine "Ex Cathedra" from his chair, it carries more weight than just a press conference or an aside in a conversation.

So you are going to a meeting and not Church!

One of these days people will realize churches are not the buildings

Not sure if serious, but, I seem to recall that one of our two most favorite "community spokeswomen" is a big promoter of this ummmmm "church", right?

Good question. If religious threads are so offensive, why not make a religion board (there is a politics board, after all) where everything that is posted is automatically whacked?

Banging on about God......isn't that a big point of having churches anyway?
If you count non-denominational churches as their own distinct sect of Christianity, there are literally thousands of different worship options that are open to people today. With that said, the problem with getting people to attend church and/or participate in activities is rarely the baseline message in my experience. Usually, it has more to do with the parish/church's ability to create a sense of community among its parishioners.
