re: Chip Credit Cards and Readers

I take chip cards, but NFC is where it's at. They tap their phone to my device and ding, I have their info. Money is in my account before I'm back in my truck.
The square chip readers seem to work faster than the Point Of Sale chip readers. Also chips never wear with use. Magstripes start to mess up after a few months or years of use.

They are slow as frick. If I'm trying to grab some candy and need to go poo, I have to start dancing now. My timing is all off

Better security my arse. My fricking card had been replaced 2 times since they put that chip reader shite on there and never before.

Why was it replaced?

Mine failed after a couple of months, card wouldn't read anywhere that had a chip reader, couldn't swipe it, couldn't just type the numbers in, would end up having to go get cash or go shop somewhere else until I got a new one.

In my experience. If I try to swipe the reader works. If I try the chip its broken.

Capital One has randomly sent me two in the mail since I activated the first one. No idea why, but I just cut them up

Yep this exactly. I've now gone thru 3 credit cards and 2 debit cards since we've switched to chip.
And last week I nearly lost $60 because of the whole "leave your card in the whole long transaction" thing. By the time my 8 foot long grocery receipt printed, I got my bags into the buggy, collected some Kroger stickers for my kids, and put my card away, I'd forgotten about the cash (which is of course dispensed in a whole diff area of the self checkout machine). I don't do cash back often so it wasn't my routine.
Thankfully the cashier saw it immediately after and put it away with a note in her register.

I was told that Europe's been doing this for years and how great it is.
I was just in Europe and their readers take about 2 seconds. Way faster than the crap america is using. And all their readers are portable so they bring the reader to your table in restaurants. Had a waiter tell me that by law I had to be able to see my card at all times is why they do that. They also have pin #s for their CCs. They laughed at me when the reader made me sign. How is a signature gonna keep anything secure? Get in the 21st century america.

Because they can more easily detect potentially fraudulent charges. Duh.

They have not been around that long in the US - most banks only started issuing them in the last year or so. One of my banks ( a smaller one) still has not started issuing chip cards yet.
For the cards I have (other debit card and credit card) that have the chip, it might take 3-5 seconds longer. I've never had problems with them not working. What happens more often is that the retailer says the chip reader isn't working, so I just slide the card and keep going.

Especially with a debit card. You should NOT be given the option of PIN vs signing. It should always be PIN only. Same for credit cards. Sorry folks, but America is way behind not only Europe, but the entire world on this one.

I'm pretty sure European banks do not provide credit card fraud protection to consumers like US banks do. Disputed charges etc etc. The rationale is that if someone else got your card and pin, it's your fault.
With the switch to chip in the US, the liability shifted to retailers if they did not have the ability to accept a chipped card and it remains with banks if they didn't provide chipped cards. Consumers still have the protection.
So our technology may not be great, but the consumer protection is still better.
Anyway the whole thing is a farce because fraudsters gonna fraud and chips don't do jack for online transactions.

i think they are a waste of time

Never had a problem with them myself.

Never had a problem. Chip works fine, fast too.
I have massive fraud protection on my CCs too.
Need to call my bank and alert them of overseas charges or they will be denied. can be a PITA but probably worth it. Screw Russian and Chinese hackers.

They do take longer to process. However, still shorter in time than the old lady who still writes checks.
