I’ve heard and read about those Nazi subs sinking ships off the coast of Louisiana. Did it create any kind of panic in New Orleans back then? Were old baws in Venice loading up shotguns looking for a fight? An old version of the Cajun Navy fighting U-boats would make for a cool movie, to be honest.

Balloons were used during the Civil War too. I think I remember hearing about some bombs being dropped from them, but they were mainly for observation.

There are stories of shrimpers going out and trading fresh fruits and vegetables for gold.

ETA I had a fraternity brother from Houma who was searching for the UBoat that sunk off the mouth of the Mississippi. He never found it but somebody else eventually did. He told me a bunch of the lore surrounding it.

U-166 GoM

Plenty of uboats up and down the east coast and GoM. There are at least 3 that I’ve seen off of the NC coast.

Several patrol reports of Uboats making their way into Charleston Harbor, up the Cape Fear River, broaching past Cape Henry in Norfolk, taking pictures of Manhattan with all of its lights lit up.

The Battle of the Atlantic is truly the battle that won the war. Without those supplies getting to England and Russia, both fronts collapse.

It reminds me of the Japs sending over balloon bombs since it's basically the same thing if they strapped a bomb to it.

They did. But not before it sunk a cargo ship. A bunch of shrimpers from Morgan City got the call and went out there and rescued people in the water and brought them back to the hospital in Morgan City. There’s a pretty good book on the story of that. Read it a few years ago but forgot the name.

It's not really consorting, more a gentlemen's agreement so they don't sink your livelihood.
