A child struck by a float during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade Monday in Abbeville has died.

The child, whose name and age have not been released, was struck by a float during the parade around 11:30 a.m., a spokesman for Abbeville Police said.

Witnesses say the child was struck by the vehicle pulling the float after entering the roadway for a piece of candy or throw. No barricades were placed along the roadway during the parade.

The parade was stopped after the child was hit, and then detoured. Witnesses say the mother was on scene but was also watching several other children during the parade.

No other information was released by Abbeville Police.

That's horrible.
Always a fear of mine of a kid reaching for. Throw and another kid running into him and knocking them under a float.

As said as it is, the stereotypes in this story are glaring.

Actually hit by the truck pulling the float. I would NOT want to drive one of the trucks pulling those things with people crowded around both sides.

With little ones at a parade you either need a ladder or one adult per kid. Always makes me nervous when the little guys are up front.

Sad but this shite happens if you can't watch your kids. Kids will run after candy/throws and you have to drill it into them to not go apeshit.......

You have to worry about the driver of the truck now. There is no way in hell he/she gets through this mentally and emotionally.

APD will be tried for sure.
