I recommend to buy a cheap one off amazon
$100-150 and will still be nicer than a rental

If you want to go really cheap, go to Tim's Formal Wear. A few years ago in undergrad I bought a tux and shoes for like $75. It got me through all fraternity formals.

After Five Tuxedo on Airline is not cheap, but it's cheaper than Men's Warehouse. The same tux is $50 less and the service is much better at After Five.

The problem with buying a tux is that if it's for a wedding, nobody goes with just traditional black anymore. If you're buying it for Mardi Gras Balls or something to that effect, buying is definitely the way to go.

Tuxedos to Geaux in Metairie does a fair amount of business from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. They sell you a complete Tux-pants, jacket, shirt and either a vest/cumberbund and suspender combo for $169.
On top of that, you get free alterations for life.
You can find cheaper tuxes, but they're cheaper tuxes. You can't beat free alterations because believe me kids, you're gonna put on weight after college. What you won't do is get taller for the most part.
Seriously, ask for Mr. Mel at Tuxedos to Geaux.
