BATON ROUGE — Changes are coming for some people receiving food assistance benefits.

Effective Thursday (Oct. 1), the state says able-bodied adults without dependents must meet a minimum work requirement to qualify for the benefits.

The state, in a news release, said those in that category will be required to work at least 20 hours per week or be enrolled in a federally-approved job training program. If such a person doesn't meet the requirement, they will only receive benefits for three months out of a 36-month period.

The change comes as the state allows a federal waiver to expire Thursday. The waiver currently allows adults, ages 18 to 49, who are capable of working but who aren't working and who don't have children to receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits without an imposed time limit.

SIAP-Did a search and no go. What do you guys think of this?

Good for them but I bet Obama steps in and shuts it down.

Who would ever think that in any universe this is a good idea?

This is a good start, but it won't make much impact. The vast majority of people who have SNAP do actually need it.

The real fix to getting people off of these benefits is a change in the culture of people. Focusing on family, education and social/economical responsibility will have far more impact on our society than restricting benefits.

Two income households (or divorce / child support / involved parents) with involved parents produce more successful young adults. That is irrefutable fact. There are exceptions obviously, but numbers don't lie.

The problem is that we as a society have made it where anyone who brings up that certain racial groups in this country have more problems with the above issues than others is immediately called a racist and brow beat into losing their job or just gets shut up. The irony, of course, is that when it is brought up, the person saying the "racist" thing is speaking about the one thing that will help that group of people the most.

Exactly. Let's quit collectively pretending that anybody on welfare is ever gonna do anything constructive.

Please

Speaking of food stamps, I had a keen observation at the grocery store the other day.

Young AA female with a litter of pups pays with an EBT card, then loads her loot into a late model Navigator.

Middle aged AA female pays with cash and loads her bags into a very modest late 90's sedan.

A question of priorities perhaps?

Not saying that this generation will do anything constructive, but if they can change the culture of how they operate, within 1-2 generations, the problem fixes itself.

the Japanese people used to gardeners and blue collar poor people in this country in the early-mid 1900s. Now they kick arse and graduate college at an impressive rate. Why are blacks and Latinos different? The same cultural emphasis on education and family isn't there at the same rate.

Of course I am generalizing because there are exceptions, but I like to work problems big to small. If 65% of a group does something bad and 35% are good, I work on fixing the 65% first.

People who think everyone on welfare is useless are just as unproductive to the issue as the people who abuse the system and let it define their lives.
