Announced yesterday. A number of parishes soon will be "ain't dere no more
Presumably this frees up cash both from reduced expenses as well as selling properties to go towards paying off the victims of the pedo priests.
1) Our Lady of Angels in Waggaman and St. Bonaveture in Avondale will combine under a new name, keeping Our Lady of Angels campus
2) St Gertrude in Des Allemands and St John the Baptist in Paradis will combine under a new name, keping St John the Baptist campus
3) St John Bosco and St Rosalie, both in Harvey will combine. They already shared a priest. There will be a new name. Unknown yet which campus will be kept.
4) St Mary of the Angels and Our Lady Star of the Sea, both in Orleans Parish, will merge under a new name, keeping St Mary of the Angles campus.
5) Transfiguration of the Lord, St James Major and St Gabriel, all in Gentilly, will merge under a new name, kept campus TBD. Interesting is that Transfiguration was a combination of three parishes already, that occured after Katrina. So really now there will be 1 parish for what used to be 5.
6) St Theresa of Avila in NOLA will be split between St Patrick and St Alphonsus
7) St Hubert in Garyville will merge St Peter in Reserve, keeping the St Peter name and campus... however, St Hubert will remain as a mission church and host one Mass each weekend.
In the end, total parishes drop from 111 to 103.
Additionally, OLDP in Metairie and Christ the King in Terrytown were on the chopping block, but have been given a repreieve for now.
Anyone attend any of the impacted parishes? How are you taking this? Seems like all of the parishes impacted have struggled with attendance and finances.

There are a lot of small parishes based on a time when traveling 5 miles in the country or even 10 blocks in NOLA was a big deal
Now its not. So consolidation makes sense

Also, a traditional church building requires a lot of renovation to turn it in to something else, so you can only get so much by selling one.

Right... but I'd imagine the savings in maintenance probably is strong enough to where you take whatever you can get for selling it. Most of these campuses are old.
Some of these in the city will become teardowns and the land used for a few houses or something. Puting them back into commerce and back on the tax rolls.

It is. But as other protestsnt churches go more woke i wonder if there will be a shift back
The pope says some woke stuff occasionally but it isnt doctrine.

Will they have to co-sign the deal?

Seems like it's the non-denominational churches here that are picking up these leavers.

religion/church going in general is shrinking across the populace.

How much do these kids get paid? If it’s more than a mil it’s probably not that bad of a deal like I feel like I forgot a lot of stuff from when I was a kid anyway

They've been doing this in rural parishes for several years now. Some churches were within a mile or two of each other, one was the white church and one was the black church. This happened in the small town my wife was from with a little wringing of hands but mostly uneventful.
