I wasn't aware that anyone reviled Bono or even found him insufferable. Of all the celebrity activists out there Bono has always struck me as the most knowledgable and genuine. I'm far to his right politically but I've never counted him among the pretentious or the douchified.

I was kind of neutral on him TBH. I felt that he could have become more "mainstream" faster once culture started to change and his catchphrases started to be parroted by others. He had largely achieved his objective which was to make sports and sports anchoring jobs more accessible and mainstream for black men/women and towards black culture. That may be a ham-handed statement but by and large it's true and it's what several on ESPN said in regards to his inspiration to them and his legacy.

I like him too and think he's an amazing humanitarian. But tons of people find him insufferable (that South Park meme of him really caught fire).

Actually I never cared for his shtick. It seems he he was a really great guy in real life though. Sucks that someone who took such great care of themselves can still die young in a way completely out of their control.

To the OP, watch Everybody's All-American. It is a great portrayal of the "hero that lives on" story. I get what you are saying. Most people I know speak of Kurt Cobain like this.

I remember thinking about this when Jerry Garcia died

He became much bigger in death than he'd been in life. He died at just the right moment for baby boomers to wax nostalgic over their lost youth/idealism/whatever.

I actually didn't like him for this reason. I could take a little goofiness with Berman but Stuart Scott went way into the next level. Unfortunately, IMO ESPN has suffered because of this. Cold Pizza was pretty solid when it started and now First Take is a joke. They went after a certain demo an got it, but made things unwatchable for others.

Get off my lawn.

Kinda like "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain"?
