I remember like 3-4 years ago people were really tired of Stuart Scott and his stylings/schtick. "Booyeah" had become kind of a snarky anti-meme almost like Berman's "byackbyackbyackbyackbyack" had become.

Now he's to be a legend. I realize this post might be controversial, but it's interesting to me how much the timing of a celebrity's death can influence his/her legacy. If Marilyn Monroe had lived she may have become a relative joke like Liz Taylor had become. Jim Morrison seems that way too - if he had lived to 60 his shitty poetry would have ruined his legacy.

Say that Bono had died in a plane crash right after U2 had re-intented themselves in the early 1990's and were for a year or two the coolest rock band in the world. He'd have been remembered as fondly as Bob Marley or John Lennon. Instead he lived, and is now a punchline to many jokes, is generally reviled and viewed as "insufferable".

Anybody else find this interesting? "Timing is everything" is very true when it comes to celebrities and their legacies IMO.

When someone dies in the prime of their career, it's always going to be impactful.

Someone dying at 90 doesn't really hit home as much

Dying young leaves a lot of untapped potential.

The personal part with his daughters etc is certainly sad.

I couldn't stand him

I stopped watching Sportscenter and the MNF postgame so I wouldn't have to see him

I'd rather be trapped in a room with 100 Chris Bermans than have to listen to Scott's shtick

If you want to make the point you are making, make it about a shitty person that everyone flipped there opinion about because they died, like Micheal Jackson

Don't make it about a great fricking guy in Stewart Scott, you come off like an arse.

I didn't like the guys act. He may have been an awesome guy and I hate it for him and his family but no more than I hate it when anyone else that I vaguely know dies of cancer.

I concur. I've been trying to explain this to my grandparents for nearly a decade now.

When people die, they are generally remembered for the I greatness anyway. Look at Joan Rivers. People weren't wondering aloud if she would decompose properly because she was 50% plastic. It was all about what she brought to comedy and fashion.

Stuart Scott was the best SC anchor IMO..he changed the industry for sure..I'll miss his commentary RIP

On that note I do agree with the OP about people that die early get a lot of credit....I guess because theres still a lot more those people had to offer and it was never seen...its about the unknown almost...thats my 2 cents anyway
