That's not what a godparent is in the catholic church

You attend all the sacraments. That's literally all you have to do...

Well no shite. But they can write ole Uncle Stu in there if they want to also. The Godparent today is only really a title these days

But that is completely outside of this process and has nothing to do with being a Godparent. And it's not some unilateral decision.

"shite, James left us 5 kids in his will. I guess we better look for a bigger house."

I'm not saying they are cumbersome responsibilities. You are supposed to be a role model to the child and help guide them through life according to Catholic teaching.

You do not get the child with the parents die.

Is it really that much of a responsibility?

Yeah... way too many people do it for social instead of spiritual reasons. Most godparents have no idea that they will be held accountable to this responsibility when they meet their maker. But the parents themselves will be held responsible if they didn't take the spiritual aspects of the decision serious also.

I've got 9. It's about 4 too many. I should have declined, but that's easier said than done!

Um, is this in your good book somewhere? I think you are just making stuff up. Like most people do.

Must be a very lopsided friendship that you don't value much. Birthday cards, 1st Communion, Confirmation, and small Christmas gifts.

Seems petty of you not to be willing to invest 10 hours over the next 18 years in another couples child. Are you good friends with the other couple? Why do you think they asked you?

Nah, every good Parrain has to make sure his birthday gift and christmas gift is a little better than everyone elses. That is what a godparent is all about IMHO

I flew to Rome and stood GF in St. Peter's Basilica. Aside from a few gifts now and then, I'm pretty much done too.

My buddy told me they asked me because we could all wrap a nice European vacation around it. It was fun too.

As for the role of the Godparent, it is way overblown. If a child's entire family were to perish, then the godparents might be obliged to step in and see to Catholic education. Usually Grandparents, aunts and uncles would do so, however.

I've got some replying to do.

It's not about the responsibility to do it. It's about the spiritual care I could provide. As I've gotten older I have had more and more questions about what being a catholic is to me. I don't think it's fair to the parents for me to contradict what they might say religiously or in turn, abide by their beliefs because they chose me to be their son's godparent.

I could easily show up to the sacraments and play my little role, but I have come to believe that is not what the godparent is for. That is what my godfather did.

Someone mentioned the social aspect of it, and I can look back and say that is likely what I did when I agreed to my first at 15 years old.

I only see these people once a year at best so I don't have any deep rooted relationship with them.
