Having to make a back up plan to my Sicily trip and was considering doing these three. I've done Carlsbad and BB way back in the day, but I'd really like to do some hiking and star gazing. Any shared experiences are appreciated. TIA

I wouldn't recommend starting the Guadalupe hike at 5 in the afternoon. It gets dark a lot faster than you think and those steep switchbacks have a lot less footing with just a headlamp leading the way.

White Sands National Monument is right near there as well. I didn't like it too much but a lot of people seem to like it.

I have plenty of time for all three. BB takes more time due to the amount of space to travel. For Carlsbad I'll do the usual cave tour as well as the Hall of the White Giant tour. I'd like to end it with their September 12th bat program and star gazing party. I'll probably just spend one day in Guadalupe Mountains. If I have time I might swing by White Sands National Monument and then go to Big Bend.

If you're at White Sands on Oct 3, you can visit the Trinity Site. It's only open twice a year LINK

I was in colorado last week and would totally recommend a trip to the rockies this time of year....coming from the soupy air of mississippi to the crisp, 47 degree air in steamboat was flat heavenly....

Stay in Artesia, NM for better hotel rates. Carlsbad is in the 220-270 range right now.

Big Bend is extremely underrated. This time I want to head over into Mexico from inside the park.

The worst hotel I've ever almost stayed at was a Worst Best Western in Carlsbad. It had a "micro kitchen" in the closet with roaches literally stuck in grease. I got my money back and stayed in the SUV.

For Carlsbad stay at the Swiss Chalet best western in Pecos

141 S Frontage Rd
Pecos, TX 79772
United States

Crazy cool indoor pool and hot tub for the kids

Breakfast was great

And the architecture and building itself was unique

Rooms were nicer than the nicest Hampton

So which one of you is in the purple & gold Suburban with tiger print on the hood and LSU on the doors? Just spotted this impressive ride in Carlsbad and figured it must be someone from TD.

Lived in Artesia while working on the Pecos River back in the early 80's...worst place I have ever lived! Got out of there as soon as possibke and moved to Albuquerque... loved it. Did like Carlsbad and the mountains of SE NM, however.

Big Ben will be hot as balls in Sept. I wouldn't want to hike in that heat. Go to ft. Davis state park which is an hour and a half away but at 5000 ft altitude and much cooler. Then you can go up to the McDonald Observatory in the evening for a star party. Check the schedule for the parties....they are once a month or so. Also check out Marfa for some art and eat a Marfalafel at Food Shark.
