I backed into my neighbor who was parked in the street across from my driveway yesterday morning while leaving for work. Left a note , went to work.

Met with neighbor last night , told him to get a quote and i'd give him cash . Quote came back $1800 (have a copy of the quote) - Needs new rear quarter panel and new rear driver door.

Called my agent : Since I have a clean driving record , he said $1800 is on the high end to not just have the other driver make a claim on my insurance. Said my premium could go up $10 a month or $100 a month , he doesnt know , but since I have a clean record , probably wont be bad.

My question really is this : My vehicle has 100% zero damage , and does not need repair . If he files a claim on my insurance , is it going to ding my clean Carfax on my vehicle ?

I asked my agent and he said he really doenst know , but thinks its up to the collision company repairing the damaged vehicle that reports to Carfax . Since no damage to my vehicle , and no repairs needed / reported , in theory I should be good.

I want to keep my Carfax clean , thus the only reason i'd pay $1800 vs just having it claimed on my insurance . Dealerships try to knock off a few thousand $$ on trade in on anything other than a clean Carfax.

**Agent said it would fall under liability which I have zero$ deductible.

When I say "Agent" im referring to my broker.

I'll hang up and listen. Geaux Tigers.

Yes it would be up to the collision center to report on carfax, Im not sure though if when they report a vehicle to carfax for having accident, if requires them to give both of the vehicles involved.

I would tend to think this because I have seen carfaxes that have an accident reported, but with no damage to the vehicle.

Tip for next time to avoid this scenario, look behind you when you backup.

I've worked in insurance for about 5 years now. The worst answer in claim cases are "it depends". From seeing different severity of claims, it's my suggestion to just pay him the amount to fix his car. Especially since there is no damage to your vehicle. For your agent to say it could go up between $10 or $100 a month is too big a gap to gamble with IMO. If you want to be extra attentive, maybe take the quote to another shop and see what they'd do for the same work. Your neighbor probably told the guy what happened and he over quoted him knowing you're the one paying. Auto shops always win in these scenarios. They're the necessary evil of owning a vehicle.

Why would the accident go on your Carfax report if your car isn't having a repair and no police report is filed?

Is a clean carfax worth more than $1800?

I've never had anyone ask for one, and I've never ever heard them mentioned at a dealership.

Some dealerships will knock off a few thousand depending on the severity of whats reported when you trade it in .

This is also a good point, I dont think one minor accident is really a big deal on a carfax... lots of cars now a days have been in a minor wreck. I think it only becomes an issue if you have multiple wrecks/ serious wreck with severe damage.

The incident will probably be reported on your car's VIN as: Accident/No Damage
You neighbors' car will have an ordinary damage report and will devalue his vehicle.

Pay the $1800 and avoid both scenarios, you win in the long run.

Pay it yourself. Your will insurance will surely go up more than $10.00 per month, and the rating will stay on for four years. If it goes up $50 per month, 48 months, you're looking at $2400.00. $100 is $4,8000.00. Plus, it will be held against you if you have another claim and you could get rated as high risk. Insurance is for major shite.

Replacing a quarter panel is not cheap, and is frame damage on most vehicles.

Yeah...

And I know this is highly dependent upon the policy/company, but after I totaled my car I was expecting the worst. Spoke with my agent and he said it won't go up at all because this is my first claim and the last ticket I got was over 15 years ago. Didn't change one iota.

if it's a Hyundai, no. If it's a luxury car, yes it will and depending on availability of that car at the time it's being traded/sold at auction it can be significant.

I'm in the auto remarketing industry, trust me on this one.

incorrect. no qtr panel is considered a part of the frame on any vehicle.

support pillars between the doors, front end radiator supports, C pillars and actual frames are all considered frame damage.

assuming this is Louisiana,

how old are you?

any youthful drivers on your policy now?

AFA on record is surely going to cost you more than $1800 in insurance surcharge over next 5 years.

Don't worry, he'll probably report it to your insurance anyway and F you right in the A.

The bigger reason to just pay the $1,800 out of pocket is to avoid having an at-fault accident listed on your record. An at-fault accident will likely increase your car insurance by 20-30% for 3-5 years, depending on how far back your insurance company looks at driving history.

**Agent said it would fall under liability which I have zero$ deductible.

That's true for the damage to your neighbor's car. Deductible only applies to damage claimed on your own vehicle.

quote:

My vehicle has 100% zero damage , and does not need repair . If he files a claim on my insurance , is it going to ding my clean Carfax on my vehicle ?

It might, but shouldn't affect your trade in or resale value if Carfax shows a zero damage accident.

Cause they don't tell you, but they do run em. They'll ask if thenvehicle has been involved in any accidents when they already know if there's one, or not, on the car fax. It's one of the ways they check if you're shooting straight.
