Car Dealerships Just Can't Help Them Selves

I was randomly scrolling some Toyota pages on Instagram and got served an ad for this car for sale...a 2000 Toyota Echo with over 200K miles on it listed for sale at a $5,500
LINK
So I decided to check out the KBB value and the trade in value is $665 and the private party value is $1,600...but Mach Haik is asking for almost 300% more than the fair market value.
Car Dealerships behave like they WANT the public to hate them.

You don't have to buy the car. You did your homework. If others don't, that's their fault.

Oh come on, I'm all for capitalism but fricking your customers is the worst, and companies that do deserve to be shite on.

They’ll find that buy that will finance $5500 for 60 months. Won’t seem so bad at that note.

Offer $1000 and see if they bite

I mean, supply and demand right? People buy all sorts of overpriced crap. When they stop buying, the price will correct.

why are you using private market value comparing to on lot value?
sorry, you aren't going to find a running toyota on a car lot for less than 2k.

True capitalism requires real competition. Dealers in Louisiana really aren't willing to compete with each other. It also seems like a few autogroups own most of the dealerships.

I'd love to buy directly from Ford and Chevy, but I can't do that, so spare me beauty of capitalism argument with a protected industry.

I hat dealerships because they are very shady. Even the big ones. Gotten worse since the pandemic.
With that said this has always been the case. They have to turn a profit.
It's like our friend on here who goes to auction and buys something for $5 then resells it for $75.

Something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

You can get $5k cars in Houston. I'm seeing a 2013 Chevy Spark with 110k miles for $5k
2010 Nissan Altima 92k miles for $6k
2011 Ford Fusion 155K for $5.5k
2006 Volvo w only 80k miles for $5k
2010 Hyndai Alantra 146k miles $4.5k
2010 Kia Soul 96k miles $6k
Go to Houston to buy cars, hundreds of cars btwn 80-150k miles for $5k

Not trying to defend the dealerships, but there are a lot of other factors that go into these decisions. Sure the trade in value is $665 now, but what was it when they accepted it as a trade-in? Once they accepted it, what costs have they since incurred to own the vehicle, list it, insure it... What about all of the other indirect overhead that needs to be considered. They also don't operate as a charity, so it's understood that anything they sell would have a profit margin associated with it. Without ever seeing the financials of a dealership, I am sure there is a set %age PM with all vehicles, and any vehicle under a certain amount probably has a flat $ amount profit before they consider selling.
Also, that baw buying it at a private party value of $1,600 isn't also trying to turn it around and flip it for a profit

They cant make their own prices on new anymore as internet kinda ruined that for them.
They can rip off people in financial ruin though, so they've opted to do that.

It’s possible that someone accidentally hit the 0 key twice. Is this typical of their listings or an outlier? If it’s an outlier you can bet it was a typo. If not, geez!

KBB only compiles data for 21 years. After that it’s just an estimation/best guess. Even when you get past about 15 years, their numbers start to vary wildly.
Also has an issuing valuing low dollar vehicles. That’s why you got the $665 number. The minimum value of a vehicle that starts, drives, and has no major mechanical issues is $1,000.
However, $5500 for that car is ridiculous and at a dealership you are looking at something more like $2,500 as a realistic asking price.
