Well applying a salt paste directly to it ranks right up there with the worst pain ever !

First avoid toothpastes with sodium lauryl sulfate as ingredient. Go buy Orajel Antiseptic Rinse use it 3 to 4 times a day when you feel one coming on. Stops mine dead in their tracks. I've also had success with a product called Cancaid if the sore is a full on flare up. Helps with pain and puts a protective coating on the sore to free it from further irritation from talking or chewing.

Just keep peeling it off until it looks like a blood spot. It decreases it by a full week.
