Cartels are getting stupid. Once they start hurting Mexico's main tourism hub, they are going to catch a lot of heat from their own government as well as U.S. and others.

it ain't working, I recall circa 2008-2009? Mexico named some bigshot retired generalissimo as the new drug czar for the Cancun/Cozumel area and within a week the cartel kidnapped, tortured, and murdered him then cut his head off and stuck it on a pole by a sign welcoming tourists to Cancun as they were exiting the airport, it stayed up there for a few days

It has been frequently speculated and sometimes reported that the cartels launder money through these resorts. This seems likely to be cartels fighting over these assets. Might even be a warning from the cartel that was involved with the Hyatt property to the one involved with this hotel. Just an idea.

Looks like all mexicans on the beach. Where are the gringos?

I went in 2011. There were more international people there than gringos. Vacationers from all over the world.

Some people enjoy lying around in the sand soaking up sun. Others enjoy storming a beach on jetskis, armed with automatic weapons. Different strokes.

Exactly. I went in 2000 and liked it so much that I returned in 2001. Would not take my family there, the Cartels took over.
I was there in 2004 and it was nice but the solicitations were relentless. Everywhere you went, it was "buy this, come here, buy that." It was exhausting, and everything outside of the resorts was unsafe.

My Marriott credit card gave me 4 nights and 5 days at one of their hotels on the beach for a total price of $250. They also gave 15000 points on top of it.

I guess I'm going to Cancun.

The beaches on the Ames in Israel always have armed Israelis on them. Outside of liking their weapon choices it’s never really phased me.

This is bad news for all those cosmopolitan travelers who are just too cool to go to a safe vacation spot. Mexico is completely fine! You just have to be careful like anywhere else!

Many times. Nowhere has it been as relentless as in Cancun.

This used to be why the French Quarter had heavy police presence and low crime. Keep the tourists coming no matter what.

Current city admin is too dumb to even do that so…
