The state is not sending out a clear message. I've heard 2018, I've heard 2020, and I have not seen any hard info about what to do to get one if your license is not up for renewal.

Can I fly overseas in 2018 if I don't have one? Will my passport not suffice to get me through security?

frick Bobby Jindal.

As I understand it, you will need the "Real ID" for international travel beginning in 2018.

You will need it for domestic air travel beginning in 2020.

I think it's why Jindal changed the effective period between license renewal. Mine is now good through 2022. Plenty of time for this to get hashed out.

Currently without it, you will not be allowed in most federal buildings and military bases.

You'll need your SS card, birth certificate AND a third form of ID tying you to your address. I used a State Farm bill. PLUS your current unexpired driver's license.

All this is moot if you have a passport correct?

Starting October 1, 2020 "every air traveler will need a REAL ID-compliant license, or another acceptable form of identification, for domestic air travel."

A valid us passport is considered one of the other acceptable forms of identification by Homeland Security for flying or entering federal facilities.

They said this in 2013. I got a passport. 4 years later and they're still pushing it back

TWIC is also accepted for air travel. I just renewed my license and figured since I had a passport and a TWIC there wasn't a reason to get a real id.

I don't think the state regulates any of this?

I'm sure the homeland security website has more info on this.

So when you renew, you have to specifically ask for the real ID?

Yes. It's more money and I think you actually have to go into the DMV. You can not renew online.

I'm pretty sure the IDs Express DMV on Perkins and Siegel gives out are real ID compliant IDs.
