Oh, I just looked hovered over the link and saw it wasn't an Apple product. Either way, PCs are shitty. Enjoy your virus and malware protection software bros!

Some of the ADATA SSDs are faster than the Samsungs though.

I've never had it. I always do a fresh install of Windows on my laptops (and desktops obviously since I build them from scratch) so I don't have all the shitty software the manufacturers install on them and I never install any virus or malware protection but the thing is I'm not a moron and download shite that will give me viruses.

I just run Malwarebytes every now and then to make sure but I have never had one single major issue.

Plus my ITX case has options for 4 drives in it even though it's a small arse case.

Happen to remember which case this is and whether or not it's got an external/optical bay?

My desktop drive space isn't even an issue.

I've got one free SATA port at present. Kind of regretting going a55 over a75. Those two extra ports would be nice down the road. Mine is my DVR, and I keep the uncompressed media files on the drive because, well, I can.

That and my computer likes to overheat when I run mcebuddy/handbrake for extended periods of time (frequent occurrence) so I got tired and just bought more HDD space. Next moved will be for some sort of used rackmount server with, minimum, 2 l5420 or better Xeon (would like l5520 for a more modern socket) and a mini itx. Idea would be to have the small one record, script it to the rackmount where it would do the heavy lifting and convert + compress the files, then make them available to stream back to the little guy at the front of the house.

Side note: all ".edu" email addresses will grant you a copy of Win Server 2012 for free, personal use, in case you were unaware/interested/applies.

You mean that program I set up to run in the background and never pay attention to so that I can use a far superior OS with much better hardware at much lower costs than you since I'm smart enough to take ten minutes and "set and forget" it?
Ok. I will.

I'm not sure what's or about that.

The point is I'm not actively running malware protection 24/7. I check it as a precaution and only do it if I have been torrenting a lot.

I guess I'm back to being out of date on my SSd knowledge. I thought Samsung was winning the longevity contest, at least. In retrospect, they're probably all fast enough and reliable enough.

You can add an optical drive to it. I didn't though and used it for HDD space.

Not entirely true. They are all faster than HDDs obviously but there are some that are far superior to others. Samsung is the best overall IMO but I have seen specs of the ADATA drives and they beat Samsung in that regard.

Many thanks.

And as far as the SSd drive speed, my comment was more or less intended to mean "the worst one is so much better than an HDD and the gap between them is probably more notable than the gap between the worst SSd and best SSd" while also pointing out that, though not necessarily held in high regards in terms of speed or failure rates, my little Vertex keeps (not humming...because it has no moving parts! But something) along just fine.

I considered mentioning something about SSDs, but I don't feel like explaining to people that they only need a 32GB one or so and then to install everything else on a second HDD that isn't a key app. Otherwise, you drive the price up a ton.

120 GB SSDs are less than $100 now, and I would not get anything smaller. Smaller drives tend to be slower than the larger drives in a given product line, plus, the larger size means you never have to think about running out of space unless you're installing a buttload of huge games or whatnot. Christ, a 240 GB Crucial M500 is like $120. Even if you don't use nearly the entire capacity, it makes for great temporary storage for downloads and for disk-bound processes that benefit from the source and destination drives being different, especially if the other drive is a hard drive. With TRIM enabled, you don't have to worry about losing performance as the drive gets full, because it doesn't approach getting full. Oh, and if you use VMs, they perform much, much better on an SSD, so that's another reason to go for the larger sizes.

I've been seeing some HP's come through with some no-name brand SSD's in them and it's a pretty big difference between those and my Samsungs.

I agree with everything else you write, but $120 is no small sum in a $600 machine (though I suppose you could make the argument that this same machine could be built for cheaper with those savings going into a 256gb SSd). I suppose I am rather frugal for an OT poster and a tech nerd though.

Fair enough. Most of my experience is reading benchmarks anyway. I don't touch too many computers with ssds in them. Heck. 90% of the stuff I've been doing lately is through a very lightweight client to windows Server 2003-hosted applications. Sometimes it makes me want to cry.

I bought a display model NZXT Switch case at Fry's last year. They accidentally left a 256GB Intel SSD inside

Yeah I have 256 GB Samsung 840 Pros in my laptop and desktop. I get really aggravated when I have to work on someone else's computer now. fricking slow shite.

I run an Oracle database off a Samsung 512GB. Query performance is so incredibly faster that I feel like this.
