A fever is 100.4 or greater.

And to those who don't know, why do you think 100.4 is the threshold?

Generally your temperature can raise and lower depending on the day, time of day, and level of certain things in your body. When a woman is ovulating for example, their temperature raises a full degree.

However, 99.6, as Scruff pointed out isn't really a fever because it can be considered physiological at times. Meaning your body can do it just because.

100.4 is considered a fever because it is more likely something is causing that fever through inflammatory mediators like TNF, IFN, and a couple others.

That generally means an immune response to a pathogen, however it can be from just an overproduction of those by an auto-immune process. A couple other things can cause fever, and different diseases or processes can produce different degrees of fever.

You should definitely PIIHB, the thermometer that is. Much more accurate readings from a rectal thermometer.

WHAT DO WE DO NEXT?!

I've been following along, but this hurts and all the waiting is killing me. And the blood loss. But mostly the waiting.

I'm getting dizzy.

Sorry, but that pisses me off. How do people not know this?

Probably because the range is up for debate and varies depending on how the temp is taken. Many sources cite temps between 99 and 100.4 to be "low grade fevers." If the child looks sick as shite, are you going to argue about a few tenths of a degree?

Your temperature can be lower than normal, too.

Again, I ask of the OT, why is 100.4 considered the threshold? Why not 100.2, for example? Why not 100.6?

If the pain moves to lower right side then it is probably appendicitis

99.6 is not a fever.

If she's having abdominal pain, you should probably take her to her family doctor tomorrow.

No, because the child looks sick as shite.

It's when they show up with "fevers" of 99F that pisses me off.

As for why is 100.4F considered to be a fever, it is more than likely due to averages. 98.6F is based on statistical measurements.

Ah yes, your child is sick and you come to the OT.

Hope your kid gets better, but going forward, the biggest threats to her health might just be her parents.

Think about it some more. The right answer will allow me to complete a beautiful set-up.

Scruffy won't play your game.

100.4F is essentially the accepted value for fever in the medical community.

That means little without the big picture though.

You really should try. It'll be satisfying all around, I promise.

I am aware. That's why I posted it earlier in the thread, as no one had yet pointed out that 99.6 isn't a fever.
