A set of 4 good light tires for my 4runner will run me $800-$1000 installed.
This place right down the road is $375 out the door.
Put these on my son's 85 blazer as a test and they have been great performers.
LINK
Plus I have lots of choices.
UPDATE: PICS
Hard to beat $86/tire INSTALLED

For as long as new tires last, why risk it?

You must have an only child.

They are very common for bigger trucks. However, the rule of thumb is never run them on the front tires. I know someone who did and had a major blowout that totaled his truck.

Common misconceptions about retread tires hurt your wallet and the environment. For years, consumers and fleet managers alike have been exposed to myths claiming that retread tires aren’t safe, litter our roads, and don’t perform. These myths couldn’t be further from the truth!
The reality is that retread is a trusted alternative to traditional tires. Tire retreading has many benefits including, but not limited to:
Cost efficiency. Retread tires cost substantially less than their traditional counterparts. Though the specific price range varies depending on the make and specs of the tire, retread tires can cost up to 50 percent less than brand new ones. The affordable price point is an important factor for motorists and fleet managers alike, especially in today’s sluggish economy.
Environmental friendliness. Over $20 billion is spent each year on replacing tires in the United States alone. Opting for retread tires is one of the most meaningful ways to keep our planet and roads healthy. Aside from recycling old rubber, retread tires save North America upwards of 400 billion gallons of oil annually.
Safety. In 2000, the President of the United States signed an order declaring that federal agencies must replace tires with retreaded tires whenever possible. Furthermore, up to 80 percent of both military and commercial aircraft carriers use retread tires. From heavy cars to transportation fleets, ambulances to military vehicles, retreaded tires are trusted to keep passengers and cargo safe on the roads.

Yes, nothing wrong with them on 16 of 18 on an 18-wheeler. I would not run them on the front though.

Trashy and smart are not mutually exclusive

There are a lot of things that I will buy refurbished, tires aren't one of them.

Are you talking about retreads? Do you see those long strips of tire on the interstate occasionally? They're from 18 wheelers with retreads that fall off. However, if one goes out they have another one on that side of an axle to compensate. Your 4Runner doesn't.

Lots of knee jerk comments but I haven't seen a comment yet from someone with firsthand experience.
The 'my sister's boyfriend Jeff rolled his truck and crashed into the Hoover dam because of a retread' story doesn't count.

I know a lot of big rigs run retreads, but I also see a lot more 18 wheeler tires blown out on the interstate than car tires.

Eta the feds hate rigs so they want them using unsafe tires!

Why make the thread if you are just going to ignore what everyone says? Clearly your mind is made up. I just hope your son doesn't pay the price for you testing them on him.

No joke. I have bought many and saw the wreck first hand, yet have no experience.

I've always wondered about those things. I don't think the idea is that dumb. People get blowouts on new tires too.
You should test it out and report back to us in 3 years. Let us know if your kid is still alive.

And you know with 100% certainty that is what caused the accident.. Not poorly maintained, old or improperly treated tires.
