Buick's electric unlocking gas cap

A followup of sorts from another thread -
In 1983, Buick came up with a great option - an electric unlocking gas cap. Push a button under the dash and the cap electrically unlocks itself.
The electric wires for it were around the fuel tank's outlet.
I have one on my 1983 Buick Riviera convertible (it is disabled). Apparently, someone at Buick figured out that electricity and gasoline don't mix and through a recall the systems were disengaged (and by disengaged, I mean the button under the dash was removed, as well as all wiring. There is no trace of the system other than the gas cap itself.
You really have to wonder about the automotive engineers that thought this was a great idea.
The Buick club won't penalize you in shows for not having the original electric gas cap system.

I've held off on putting my 1983 Buick up for sale for this sole reason. Glad to know I can get top dollar for it.

Putting the gas cap under the license plate also wasn't the greatest idea but at least you always pulled up to the correct side of the pump.

Yet modern cars have electric motors fully submerged in the fuel tank...

Submerged is the key word there. The cap will be exposed to vapors.

I assume you have to be at least 70 years old to join?

Gas tanks placed in the vehicle's crush zone were also bad ideas that were designed, approved and mass produced. Hey now!
