Girlfriend's mother broke her knee cap last night and is having surgery this morning and was wondering what are things that people undergoing knee rehab need? Occupational therapy type things that you can buy to make things easier on them, or things nice to have when you can't walk

Just give them more time to pay you back

You don't have to break their knees right away

But definitely use a bat

Definitely one of those cushion toilet seat things. Nothing more I like than my arse to stick to a pillowy soft toilet apparatus after I drop a constitutional.

She will be in a knee immobilizer for several weeks for the most part. It all depends on what is done. Screws... Wires.... Screws and wires... Etc. assuming she is older she will need to concentrate on keeping the thing elevated for the first couple of weeks after surgery. Basically sleep in a recliner type stuff. KEEP IT ELEVATED as much as possible. They will advise this both pre and post op.

Crutches or wheel chair to get around as she will be immobilized. Don't forget about taking her to and from appointments.... A Prius ain't gonna cut it....

Depending on what she did there isn't much "rehab" per se... If she had soft tissue damage yes, but if not then they wil give her exercises to do once the bone shows enough healing.
Sutures or staples out at about 10 days post op or so...

Everyone is unique in what goes on...

Don't know the situation or what the X-rays look like... That's about all I got. Worked in ortho trauma unit for 6 yrs.

One of the ladies that works at Southside Produce shattered her knee cap a few months ago and seems to have recovered very well. I assume she followed a reputable doctor's orders. I know she was out for a while resting up and healing. I can ask next time I'm there and I'll try to remember to update on this thread.

1. Use bing instead of the OT
2. Do not steal your girlfriend's mother's pain meds
3. Pics of gf
4. Take of your gf's mom and your gf will let you PIIHB
5. Pics of the gf

Hospital should get her a hip kit which is basically a reacher, sock aid, shower sponge on stick, and dressing/undressing stick. Depends on her weight bearing after surgery as to how she will be able to walk. If no weight bearing than she will be using crutches or hopping with a walker. Might need wheelchair short term depending on her mobility.

If she is in a knee immobilizer exercises will be pretty limited. Mostly going to be a lot of quad sets, hip abduction, and straight leg raise once able

Or...

1. Use bing to find out the best way to covertly drug your gf after...
2. "Borrowing" a few of your gf's mother's pain meds after she gets home..
3. Which will be accomplished when you cavalierly volunteer to pick her up when she is discharged. This will make your gf happy and the pill you slipped her will have her high and happy so that..
4. She will let you PIIHB while you..
5. Take pics of her and show them to the horndogs of tOT.

How do you break a kneecap?

Was the patella actually fractured? Or tendons to it separated?

A reacher or two in case she drops something on the floor next to her or grab something beyond her reach:
