Bridal diamonds: natural or man-made?

When I purchased a diamond for my wife's ring back in 1998, there was no existing competition. Man-made diamonds were only available for industrial tools.
Today, the flawless man-made diamonds have caused Debeers, the diamond monopoly, to reduce prices to become competitive, dropping prices of their rough diamonds by 40%, but they insist there will come a point where "real" diamonds prevail because the 1 to 2 carat sized diamonds becomes "too cheap" to be used on engagement rings.
My opinion is that's wishful thinking on their part and if a woman insists on getting a flawed mined diamond over a manufactured diamond then the guy looking to marry her probably should think long and hard about his decision.

“With the increase in supply we’ll see prices fall through the price point and reach a level where, long term, it does not compete with bridal because it comes too cheap,” said Rowley. “Ultimately they are different products and the finite and rarity of natural diamonds is a different proposition.”

Go with whatever’s cheaper.
Nobody will know if it’s lab or natural unless they put it under a microscope.
It’s still a diamond regardless.

They’re engagement diamonds, not bridal…that’s just band.

Bitches won't know the difference. Go cheap. It's just a stupid ring.

Biggest scam ever. Diamonds are the single most common gem stone AND we can make them identical to the real thing….
People still pay out the frickin arse for them

Fake diamonds are trashy
Why do you hate hardworking African miners ? Stealing their jobs and giving them to white guys in lab coats

Got my first wife’s diamond very cheap since it was a blood diamond I bought overseas.
Second time around I splurged on a lab diamond.

A man doesn't love you unless there are thousands of dead Africans behind that ring, sister

Now, if only we could make manufactured gold.

I did real but if i did it again id do lab grown
A real diamond is not an investment. So might as well get the cheaper option that is indistinguishable from the real thing.
Also my jeweler said if I ever wanted to “upsize” he would give me what I paid in credit towards a bigger diamond. Real or lab grown would have given me that deal.

Oddly enough I just purchased a piece of jewelry for my wife. The conversation went to man made vs. natural and I asked if man made diamonds contained inclusions. The gentleman said that yes, most man made diamonds have inclusions just like most natural diamonds.
He said the only way to tell the difference was to look at the trace contents of the diamond itself - a natural one would have other gasses whereas a man made would not.
I found it interesting and the price was negligible between man made vs natural.

Diamonds are not really rare at all.
DeBeers made them "rare". They have one of the largest stranglehold monopolies ever created.

Myth: diamonds are valuable because they're rare
In reality, diamonds actually aren't very rare. Diamonds are more common than other precious gemstones like emeralds, rubies, and tanzanite. In fact, even pure gold in its natural form is more rare than diamonds
quote:
In the 1930s, De Beers funnelled tons of money into marketing efforts to position diamonds as the perfect stone for engagement rings. This company created the iconic phrase “a diamond is forever,” and is a huge reason why diamonds are considered the “gold standard” for engagement rings.
Even before that, De Beers made efforts to stockpile diamonds from mines and release them slowly. This made diamond supply appear limited, so the gemstone seemed rarer than it was. This increased the cost of diamonds in the 1800s, contributing to their reputation as a valuable stone.

Yeah you basically have to do chromatography or something to tell the difference

There is always something special (IMO) about getting a mineral/stone created by natural forces over a LONG period of time. That said....
Diamonds aren't "rare" and the cost you pay is almost entirely because of the huge marketing/monopoly markup. I don't think I would have an issue buying a lab created diamond. Unless you are told by the jeweler, no one outside of a gemologist will be able to tell the difference.

There are many hacks in this world, diamonds amongst the biggest - not even getting into anything humanitarian
Lab created diamonds are cheaper, readily available, plus chemically and visually identical. You'd need to be a gemologist to tell the difference.
Just don't go buying a 6 carat lab created diamond on your 60k salary, that won't add up.

there is not a reasonable argument that can be made against just buying lab-grown. Made in America, cheaper, eco-friendlier and effectively the exact same thing
but reasonable and women looking to be engaged aren't typically found together

It’s a matter of taste. If size is what she values, you can get more for your money with lab grown. A little more, anyway. Some people do prefer natural, though, due to the fact that they are more rare than something that can be mass-produced. It’s not an investment, it’s frivolous. Frivolous things are usually a matter of personal taste and not practicality.

Go cheap. If a woman is going to get mad at you for saving some cash on the ring she ain't worth it.

Ask your future bride. If she says natural, run.
