Moody is nuts. This has been well known for a long time, and is also the reason they didn't let him post bail after this latest incident. He's been harassing these people for about the last 7 years. Before that, there were numerous other incidents.
And since the guy whose car he shot is a lifelong friend of my family, I have no problem with the system sending him to mental health professionals.
Trust me. He's not faking it.
This!
Bonus info:
After he shot up the car, he went into hiding and cops couldn't find. The same cop that worked the complaint is one of the first responders to the theater shooting, which happened in the next few days after Moody shot the car at LL's home.
On the way there he hears "older white male with weapons shooting randomly in theater"
His initial thought was Moody had gone completely nuts and was shooting people in the theater.
Moody is dangerous to others and himself.

We were looking for him the day before the theatre shooting and when the news first broke with the description it was my initial thought along with a few co-workers

The theater is still closed because of that. The Star Wars lines at the 14 are going to be a mile long.

The standard is whether the defendant understands the proceedings against him AND can assist in his own defense. If the answer to either is no, then he goes to Jackson or wherever for meds until he is deemed competent. This determination is made after evaluation by doctors who then testify in court.
Whether he knew right from wrong at the time of the offense is a separate inquiry and does not stop the trial from going forward.

So this dude has a long history of insanity yet his family and friends still allow him to run around with firearms?

I think he has a pretty long history of mental illness that is well documented.

Glad the theater shooting came up. Here's a shooter who survived. Whattya know, he's fit for trial despite medication for mental illness. Granted there's a huge difference in the crime but money played a part here and that's undeniable. My OP revolves around this aspect.

So they'll give him meds and turn him loose. He'll go off his meds and then what?

As has been said, people, poor and rich alike, are found incompetent to stand trial everyday. These sanity commissions are the same few doctors over and over. Not hired guns. Jackson is full of people with no money for a lawyer that have been locked up for much longer than the potential penalty for their alleged crimes.

For the 10th fricking time, they aren't going to turn him loose.

No. The part in the article about restoring his competence means they gonna try him when he's sane.
Let's revisit this in a few years. I bet a cheap beer he dies comfortably in that mental hospital with nice little family visits on the lawn(like in the Movies), never getting tried nor subjected to the reality of prison for his crime.

Not as cool as either of those. More like people shitting and pissing themselves crazy.
Wait, so maybe both of the crazies you mentioned.

subjected to the reality of prison for his crime
So effectively, your "Funny Farm Paradise" scenario would be a much longer and more effective punishment. Yeah. All you can eat Thorazine buffet. frickin' rich folk.

Am I reading it right that his intended victim hired a lawyer for him, or does he have move than one ex wife?
