I'm Irish mostly. I'd like to get an old Irish proverb on my right inner bicep, but I need to make sure I get the correct translation, which will take a little bit more time and research.

All of this. Look through the artist's book too. Make sure the style he specializes in is comparable to what you want done. Don't let the artist talk you into anything you're not !00% sure on. Make sure he shows you the stencil. Study it. Watch the placement of the stencil. Make sure it's exactly where you want it. Tattoos are a collaborative art. If your artist is an arse, and gets pissy every time you make a suggestion, or disagree with him, find another artist.

I get what you're saying, but what should I do? Get an American flag? Haha. This country is so young and its roots are embedded everywhere but here. Asian culture is so rich and deep. Similar to reading about Greek mythology and stuff. It's endless and extremely interpretive.

Not in BR but Cliff at Arsenal in Bryan, TX does some nice Japanese work.
It's been said but don't just walk in find an appointment only custom shop and look at their portfolios and talk to them about what you want if you're not comfortable with the artist go somewhere else. BTW I'm speaking from experience I'm roughly 60% covered

One of the things I forgot to mention...
DO NOT CHEAP OUT on this tattoo. You get what you pay for typically. You're going to be stuck with it for the rest of your life... better to shell out an extra $1,000 for long term peace of mind than to save a few bucks to make you feel less broke and end up wishing you had done something different. There's nothing worse than a cheap tattoo.

Why don't you just save up enough to go to Japan, and while you are there get a real deal Yakuza tattoo that will take forever and be painful as hell.

Small tangent here; last time I was in Hawaii, we stayed at the Four Seasons in Maui. I saw a Japanese dude with Yakuza tats at the pool. He had the keen hawkish look of a killer. So either this guy was Yakuza or playing at it really well. I didn't want to stare too much, incase he decided to pull out a samurai sword on me.

No Jap specialistist in BR that I know of. Look up Randy Muller at Eye Candy in New Orleans. He did mine, and I get compliments daily.
