Bought a painting. An original. Do I own the image for commercial purposes?

I purchased an original piece of art. It's a painting. I think it has potential commercial value as a print, poster, t-shirts, prints, and so on. I think I can market the painting on products and sell them.

Since I bought the original artwork at a gallery do I own the image to do what I wish with it? If I printed t-shirts or licensed it for commercial uses do I alone get the profits?

I'm admittedly not an art enthusiast, but I don't think that is how that works...

Is there a name written at the bottom of the painting?

Since you are a socialist, Scruffy thinks that we should all own it.

Your communist arse doesn't believe in private property rights so you can promptly eat my a-hole with this hypocritical arse thread.

I don't think so. It's still at the gallery until the end of the month. I bought it at the opening. It's hanging on the wall there still.

I own it. It's the original.

Very capitalistic of you, comrade.

Funny how capitalism and making a profit is bad unless you are the one who benefits.

No that is not it. It's a cool painting that was featured on the program cover and used in advertising. It's a striking painting that everyone liked. It was a bargain. My interest is hoping it increases in value. The artist is not famous at all but it is a good painting that everyone liked. I think it could be used in prints or t-shirts or on magazine or book covers and things like that. I really feel it has commercial value.

What if he made prints of the original before he sold it to you?
