We have a 10 yr old Chiweenie who suffers from separation anxiety every time we leave , if it's just running to the grocery store for half an hour he acts like we've been gone a month.

He's never been left alone but we have a vacation rental that doesn't allow dogs June 18-23.

Now I'm the one getting anxiety about leaving him, he's going to hate me when I pick him up or die lonely.

I think you should take the feller with ya, but probably a good idea not to, with rentals having cameras or ring systems. Our oldest dog is 15 and probably more traveled than most adults. We usually take our dogs everywhere but do board them at times.

Do you have any close friends or neighbors that can feed him and check on him so you can leave him at the house?

It's probably because, as humans, we tend to say hello and goodbye when leaving our dogs. Unfortunately, this can create anxiety for them. It's best to just leave when you have to leave. And when you come back, ignore them, until the energy in the room has come down. Or they're not exercised enough.

Going to be a hard habit to break now that he is 10 years old. The best you can probably do is exercise him on the morning of the 18th, and buy some "calming" medicine (see Amazon). It can help.

We always get an in-house dog sitter rather than boarding.

Vets usually hook ppl up with meds for their pets in situations like this and not very expensive as well.

If they aren't used to being boarded, you should get vacation rentals that allow you to bring them.

With that said, maybe a pet sitter to stay at your house with him, so he's in a familiar setting and not alone.

I’m so lucky. Our dog loves being boarded. I don’t know what they do to him there, but my wife has a bag she packs him in when we take him. When he sees that bag come out, he freaks the frick out. Jumping in the car. Maybe they get him laid when he goes, I don’t know. But he loves it.

Download the Rover app. There are people out there willing to keep him in their house if you think he’d do better. Or they could come check on him at your house. You set up a free meet and greet prior to the vacation to run through the dog’s routine. The sitters have reviews and star ratings to help filter through them.

My dog also has separation anxiety. We’ve had to board him a few times and he goes on a full blown hunger strike.

We send him to camp bow wow and Pawlins so he’s around other dogs and that somewhat helps but he still won’t eat.

Good luck baw

Try getting a house sitter. They can care for your dog, water your plants, pick up your mail, etc. Being in familiar surroundings will be less stressful for the dog than being boarded.

We had a super anxious abused golden that we did boarding/daycare for because of this. It helps if you can make a good connection with someone at the place who you can text and won't mind doing some extra checking on him. We always did that through familiarity/length of relationship, but I'm guessing $$$ would work too.

I'd try and take him to day care at the same place, even for a few hours (preferably a few times), before your trip.

Ask your vet or its if any of the staff pet sits in their home or comes to yours 2x per day. If so, go see the home and make sure safe and ask for references. Or a doggie daycare. They can keep your dog contained and give attention to if it doesn’t like running around playing. Also, local rescues, many of their people pet sit if you contact one to ask. I won’t board my dogs except at this one day care, and I know one or 2 sitters I trust. I’ve seen too many bad things with home boarders. Getting left in the yard and dying, getting away, etc. At his size and age, I’d find a place to vacay where a small dog can go.
