If Cat Stevens died tomorrow there would be tons of speculation about him becoming Islamic.
It would go on until another plane disappears, so ~ 5 days.
eta Funeral? QEII. There is no one alive who doesn't remember her either being on the throne or being the heir. Can you say that anyone else living has been that universal for that long?

Uh, did you not see how much coverage Joan rivers just received?
It's not anywhere close to what Robin received. Yeah the comic community is mourning (myself included), but there are quite a few people who aren't fans of her, and I really don't think people under 20 are that familiar with her. Robin though, we've been raised on him since the teet. One of the first 5 movies I can remember is Robin Williams in Hook, so he's had quite the impact on me.

Bush Sr. will have a big funeral. All presidents do, loved or not.

are you fricking serious?
If they killed themselves, maybe. Natural causes or an accident, I doubt it. Both are past their prime, and not that Robin wasn't, but really the way Robin died was an absolute oxymoron. The guy was the personification of happiness and joy, and basically to the world at large, happiness and joy killed itself when Robin did. If Robin had merely died in a car accident, it wouldn't have been as big, but the means of his death make it one of the biggest celebrity deaths in history.
While Michael Jackson comes close to Williams, and probably on a worldwide scale he exceeds Williams, I really think for the country as a whole, he's definitely the biggest celebrity death of the century so far. It's really just a simply tragic situation and he probably brought more joy to more lives than any celebrity in American history. Worldwide it's up for debate, but I feel confident that both Elton and McCartney could not exceed Williams as far as the American market is concerned.

How about Justin Beiber? if he dies before he becomes irrelevant
It will be the exact opposite of what this thread is asking. There will be literal rejoicing over his death. Look at the tweets from celebrities of Robin's and Joan's deaths, and I'd be shocked if Beiber got more than 10 celebrities mourning him through tweets. In fact, I'd bet more celebrities openly dance over his corpse and make fun of his piece of shite legacy. He is universally despised and when he is fortunately killed due to drag racing at the age of 26 (likely taking out another person with him) this song will be going through my head the entire day: LINK

Personally, I'll be pretty bummed whenever Paul McCartney goes, and I also think his death would get a ton of coverage.
If it doesn't happen by natural causes, then it will be an atom bomb, but I agree that dying of old age kinda takes the wind from the media's sails.
shite, it's a downer just to think about this, actually.
Harrison Ford is a good answer from earlier in this thread, and I could see people losing their shite over Oprah.
My darkhorse answers are Bill Murray, Jim Carrey and Hulk Hogan.

Founder of Chick Fil A passed away. Does this count?

Famous person alive today that will get the most press?
American? William Jefferson Clinton. Second will likely be Muhammed Ali.
Worldwide? McCartney and it isn't even close.
(Maybe Pele, but that will be regional, not global. I mean Senna's was off the hook, but he was still, relatively, in his prime. Brazil knows how to send them off, though.)
