I fear this is about to be a slaughter of IA forces. Those men have balls, though. I wish them the best.

That's apparently coming from Iraqi media and I haven't seen an independent report. Everything I had seen up to now was that the offensive wouldn't take place for several months. Not saying it isn't happening, but I'd like to see some confirmation first.

The U.S. is acting in a "supporting" role. We'll see just how supportive soon...probably satellite spying and air cover, at the very least...

I've heard the same thing and was wondering about that. I read just yesterday that they hadn't even started training the forces they wanted to use to overwhelm and take back the land from ISIS.

SF will be spotting targets at minimum, if not "advising" the ground forces.

Also, the artifacts ISIS destroyed at the Mosul museum were copies. or at least some of them were.

quote:

Mosul’s exiled governor Asil Nujaifi told Rudaw some of the ancient artifacts in Mosul Museum that were recently destroyed by the Islamic State (ISIS) were reproductions of genuine pieces that were moved to Baghdad after 2003 Iraq war.

Nujaifi accused the militants of stealing at least seven artifacts. He said UNESCO has alerted international auctions not to negotiate with the dealers.

Rudaw: What was your reaction when you saw the video?

Asil Nujaifi: It was devastating. We valued the museum and planned to renovate it. We often asked students to visit it. It was a symbol for the different epochs in Mosul. It was disturbing to see it. But the fact that most items destroyed were not real, was good news. It would be distressing if all destroyed pieces were genuine.

They of speaking of Tikrit, not Mosul. Mosul is the big prize.

I'm having a difficult time thinking the Iraqi military could be involved in a "big" invasion much less being successful. I hope they are but not holding my breath.

I don't think an attack by Iraqi forces on parts of Iraq occupied by a terrorist group strictly qualifies as an "invasion" - unless you're recognizing ISIS as a state now.

We spent 10 years over there training and rebuilding their army, only to have them turn tail and run away like pussies when ISIS came to town.

How can we be confident of success at this point?

I'm not - but, I will say - them not being held back by our suicidal, anti-victory rules of engagement gives them at least 1 advantage we didn't have.

Are the Kurds taking part in the invasion or just Iraqi military?
