NC without a doubt. Nice 4 seasons, varied topography from mountains to barrier islands. Reasonably large cities to tiny little mountain towns.

TX has a certain arrogance, lacking that (possibly fake) charm, of the Old South.

It’s called pride.

This. Charlotte is a big city yet you can drive an hour west and be in a small mountain town.

I don’t disagree, but a very different vibe. Always wanting to be on their own, not part of the Southern states. Not a bad thing, I just rule TX and FL out of Southern conversations.

It’s called douchey

I’m damn proud of being from South Louisiana. That fact doesn’t permeate every fricking conversation I have.

Texas is its own genre culturally. Not a bad thing other than the faux pride aspect, but it’s not traditional southern. Big Hispanic influence, less traditional southern “plantation” type charm, etc.

I wouldn't say nice 4 seasons, its muggy most of the year and can get chilly. Granted it isn't like the midwest. It does have varied topography, but it seems like FOREVER driving from one to the other. Large cities have tons of things to do, but they are packed in. Small towns are pretty trashy, but nice.

I was stationed at Lejeune and theres a difference from Jacksonville to Richlands (30 mins) and different from the big cities (1-3 hrs). The beaches are amazing and I honestly enjoyed them more than cali beaches.

It is "the south", but the area in NC depends on that. Larger cities, no, they claim it though. Smaller rural cities, yes, and you can understand why on a Sunday morning at a piggly wiggly.

Overall NC is a pretty good state. I would say it is indeed more "southern" than NWA.

I'm from the north though, and "southern feeling" can be felt the same in rural areas tbh.

Just like SC the sandhills have the worst in terms of weather and humidity. That strip of ancient coast that runs through "Fayettenam" with nothing but pine barrens forest is not the most appealing visually or climate-wise.

My favorite part is Western NC and the strip between the tiny town of Saluda and Asheville. It is a dream for someone that likes backpacking, small stream trout fishing, mountain biking, and rock climbing. There is even some decent East coast skiing if you spend a lot of time skiing the ice in the East you are a god on the powder in the west.

You get a real fall with plenty of color change and enough winter to get a few decent snows.

I will agree with that. Western NC is beautiful. Never really got to explore that area, because it was so far from me, but passed by it on my way to Illinois. It gets hillbilly and sketchy when you get in to WV. I still enjoyed that drive though going thru the tunnels and mountains (NC/VA/WV).

I've also traveled the other way through Kentucky and there is literally nothing it seemed in the areas I was in I saw Louisville and the interstate though, so nothing of what the state offers. I'm pretty fortunate to have lived midwest, west, south, and east coast, as well as traveling the states and world.

Western North Carolina is about as far from culturally southern as you can get without being full blown Yankee. It is Appalachia.

The problem with North Carolina is we have way too many of what we call half backs. People from up north that move to Florida, then move to WNC. They're like locusts.

Lived in Charlotte for a few years. Great place but zero southern vibe in the whole state. Georgia gets my vote.

I don't disagree at some level though I would say the hillbilly culture aligns much more with Southern culture and there aren't many bastions of true Southern culture save Charleston and Savannah. You see more of the non-elitist Southern culture when you get into the foothills.

The issue with Southern or any other culture is with the modern mobility of people most cultures that exist in places that are enjoyable to live in have been watered down.

My family has a house on Lake Summit and it is simply idyllic. Many of the houses there have been held for multiple generations.
