Robert Roth is pretty awesome. You can tell him what you are looking for and he will sketch it for you. He won't start until you approve the design. In addition, they can get a lot of diamonds in at one time for you to be able to choose which one you like best.

This guy: Steve

I've had him make multiple pieces of jewelry for my wife and he does absolutely amazing work. I recommend him to everyone whose looking for custom jewelry.

Be very careful. My family had dealt with Art's dad for years, so I felt fairly confident that I would be treated fairly when I went to him to make my wife's engagement ring. I won't go into the particulars, but I was very disappointed in the way the transaction ended. I will say this has nothing to do with the quality of the stone or craftsmanship, but I would advise you to be very particular about your timeline and budget. Get a quote in Writing!

Best I dealt with was Luckies in Houma and Aucoin Heart in Old Metarie.

Let me edit.

I went to Lucky's to look and stayed in there for an hour getting educated, he told me he wasn't letting me buy anything till I looked around. He pulled diamonds out of his pocket and let us look at them with 10x loupes. Put them on stone holder rings to see how they show on the hand. Great experience.

Next day went to Ramseys, they told me a completely opposite story of Lucky's. My wife wanted platinum, Spenser (owner of Lucky's) talked me out of it and gave me reasons why. Ramseys said he talked me out of it because "they can't get platinum".

Left Ramseys and went to Aucoin Heart and talked with Brett? which is the owners son. He told me the exact same things that Lucky said.

Hit a few more "mall stores" and they didn't really know much, couldnt show GIA certificates or anything like that.

It was a toss up between Aucoins and Lucky's, since it was such a big purchase we decided to spend our money locally and go with Lucky's, that was 14 years ago, my wife does mammograms and still gets complemented daily on her ring.

What makes you say that? You pick the quality diamond you want.

I want to go with an emerald cut, at least 1.00, D color, SI1 clarity.

She has told me that if I were to ever get her one, she doesn't want too much spent on a ring. I think that's code or a type of cryptic message though.

Wanting to put it on white gold. Still need to figure out the ring size which may be tricky, don't know how to do that without coming off as obvious.

Appreciate the responses from everyone, been very helpful.

I'm only doing it once, I don't want to take a half measure. She told me that she wouldn't want more than $1000 spent (lol)

We are in the process of designing a ring, also.

We've met with Hannon's several times and so far, I really like them.

Everyone I've talked to has given them a strong recommendation.

Emerald cut diamonds look really small unless you get a 3-4+ carat stone. I wanted to get my wife a 3 carat emerald but it just didn't look that nice so we went with a 3.4 oval instead. Looks much nicer.

She's a fan of the emerald, I'm still trying to figure out a setting band to throw it on. I think that'll compliment the stone when done right.
