Best military jobs?

One of my sons (jr in h.s.) has recently expressed an interest in the military. Strengths are math/science. Enjoys working/fixing/piddling with electrical/electronic/mechanical things. Technologically proficient. Took the ACT recently and waiting for the score. If he applied himself, I'm expecting somewhere in the 25-30 range. Kind of unsure of what he wants to do at this point.
I'm a Navy vet (Electrician for four years) who used my service to "see the world" and pay for college through the GI Bill. It worked out great for me but I would have chosen a different rate knowing what I know now.
So, which branch/rates/jobs would you suggest for a relatively intelligent young man with above avg. problem solving/troubleshooting skills? Particularly something he may be able to parlay into a civilian career with little or no additional training/coursework?

yea if wants to do it for school and future, go navy or air force.

avionics in the USN or AF...that's where I would steer him...lots of job opportunity after he gets done..training is priceless..and if he gets his A&P...in Lousiana there are lots of jobs in rotary wing aviation to support the rigs in the Gulf...good money in that...
even Navy ET or something like that would be good as well...anything with the basic electronics core in his school will translate well on a resume...

I was an aircraft electrician in the Marines. I loved my job plus I travelled all over the world
I would definitely push him towards the Air Force though! Better food and accommodations!

will have to murder the ASVAB for this at MEPS...training is long but it does pay off if he can get in...and then GTFO of the military after 6-9 years...he would walk into a job at a Nuclear plant making lots of good $$$

no...do the same EXACT job in the Navy and not have to be a jarhead..
Navy aviation and USMC aviation rates go to the same schools in Pensacola

I know the Marines had a PLC (Platoon Leadership Course) when I was going through. I didn't do it but wish I would have, I just enlisted. That way he's going to college and doing the military thing with more time to make up his mind what he really wants to do.

He's also very interested in robotics/automation. Yea, I suppose if he does join, it would be either AF or Navy.

Booo, My dad's been flying black hawks 23+ years for the army. So I'm definitely an army type of person with the people I've met over the years.

We were stationed at Ft. Rucker for 2 or 3 years but we've been stationed at Fort Hood now for about 15 years now.
