Seems odd to me. They specifically said it wasn't last month rent or security deposit. They said that they required a full month rent when someone moves in but the prorated fee means they will charge me for my first two months. Is this unusual?

Never heard of that. So they essentially want 3 months rent upfront (deposit included)?

Depends on your move in date

No security deposit. There's some thing about security deposits being charged interest or something so a lot of places just want a move in fee. So today I paid the move in fee and the prorated fee for May to move in May 5. And when I move in, they want June's rent and I won't have to pay again till July.

I saw one article by the Tribune about it but not much else.

I've always paid deposit and first month's rent, and I've lived in 7 different places. Be weary of CL scammers

some of the nicer apartments do this. We paid prorated March and full April upon moving in on like March 25th or something like that.

I think the theory behind it is that someone that doesn't belong could come up with one month pretty easy. So you weed people out by asking alot up front

Sounds about right. If you were moving in May 25 you would have to do the same. Just a lot less for May.

I do agree that is a little odd...just be sure that you will not be paying another cent until July and I think you are good.

It sounds to me like these folks have had a lot of people say they wanted to move in and then back out at the last minute leaving the place vacant for a month.

Another thing to clarify on any rental is how much notice you have to give when you leave.

So you are paying the rent for May, and the rent for June, both upfront, but no security deposit, and you won't pay rent again til July? Sounds to me like it's a way to charge a higher security deposit and keep some of the trash out that can't afford two months upfront. I'd do that any time over a security deposit

I'm going to have to go deep into savings :(. It's going to take like 2 years to get savings back to what they were.

Well, I was living with family in a small southern town where I could save. Now I'm living in an expensive major city where I'm going to be barely saving anything unless I want to be a hermit.. I had to buy furniture. I had to pay moving expenses and all that jazz. I'm not happy about the situation.

Yes if it's a house. Happens rarely, but enough for me to know about it

Search Google for "Craigslist house renting scams"

The last place I moved in, I moved in the 25th. I paid my full rent for that month. Once the next month hit I paid the pro-rated amount for the five days I was there, so like $90.

It's an apartment. I couldn't afford a house. You aren't getting a house for less than a million and you ain't renting a half a house for less than 2500 within 5 miles of here unless it's in the ghetto.

Sounds like a shifty deal. I would have hammered for no rent the partial month.
