Being a dependable volunteer

If you choose to volunteer, follow through with the obligation if at all possible. I think too many people cancel when something minor comes up. Some join organizations without intending to fulfill the minimum volunteer time requirements. This can create extra work for the other volunteers or possibly even chaos for some events.
I rarely volunteer, usually only one-day commitments or for something minor that's interesting. I remember cancelling once for a community trash pickup when I scheduled the family (including two young children). A late season cold front mixed with a steady rain impacted the decision. I thought about just doing it myself but decided that day it's sometimes more relaxing to be a hypocrite than to do the alternative.

Volunteering...it doesn't pay.

Okay... So what inspired this thread?
A lot of people decide to volunteer just to say "I am volunteering"...

This is a capitalist nation, you want work you pay for work. Get the frick out of here with your communist guilt trip.

This is a weird thread
"Guys, follow through on your volunteer commitments, it's super important"
"Once I didn't follow through"
"Now I don't really volunteer at all"

Never volunteer for anything unless it's Court ordered.

I'm also curious what inspired this.
I'm involved with one of our local playgrounds and we struggle to find parents to coach teams, we struggle to find parents to work 1 hour shift in our concession stand, to come help paint the facility on weekends, etc. My kids school struggles to find volunteers... a school of 700 kids and maybe 20 people show up at PTO meetings or to help out.
I think it's a few things...
1) So many one parent households where the parent has no time
2) So many two parent households where both parents work and don't have time
3) So many adults who work more than one job or work more than 40 hours a week in their job
4) Too many kids activities
5) Selfishness
