re: Beard care or how do I make it soft?

If Beard Oil is the only softener you used it won't work well.
A) you have to condition it. Shampoo strips all of the natural greasy oils you produce right out of the beard. Leaving it dried out.
B) don't over wash it. Your beard isn't your hair. It won't look greasy after 12 hours. Generally it's unhealthy to shampoo it more than every 3-5 days. Depending on hair type.
C) apply the beard oil while the hair is still damp. Helps seal in moisture and stuff.
D) I don't use beard oil or balm that much. If I need something, I generally use Bert's Bees Miracle Salve. Does wonders for it. It's thick enough to shape it as you put it in, and produces some nice healthy beard hair.
E) Find the conditioner and beard oil that works for you. Everyone's hair is different, everyone's hair needs slightly different nutrients. Just try random stuff out.
F) As someone else said, the longer it is, the softer it will get. Mines is like a bed of flowers after I condition it, but it's 6 or 7 inches long. After it gets around 1 inch in new length it should be fairly soft on its own. Unless you have wire for hair.
I've had at least a short beard for around 10 years. I'm growing it long just because this might be the only time I can until I'm in my 50s. Problem is, hipsters and Duck Dynasty have almost ruined the beard already.

I'm the last person who follows trends. I just got tired of having to deal with razor burn on my neck. Besides, I've noticed people treat me differently when I wear the beard. I get more respect.
If it makes you any happier though, I don't have one right now.

That's it. Suddenly millions of 20 and early 30 somethings have decided that razor burn is too much and they've simultaneously stopped shaving. Lucky for them all of these cool vintage looking accoutrements have made it to market at the exact same time.

I wasn't even thinking of duck dynasty. Yeah, you're kinda screwed with that.
Reminds me of when I was in college and I had some nice close cut sideburns after a decade of people cutting their sideburns above the ears. All of a sudden 90210 comes out and everyone starts asking if I'm trying to look like Jason Priestley or Luke Perry.

Sorry you can't grow a beard bro.
As to the OP, I use Garnier Fructis shampoo and conditioner and it leaves my beard so soft I dont need oil.

I never "started" hating shaving. I've never shaved consistently...ever. It sucks. I'm too lazy and I break out in acne when I do.
I'm 27 and have probably used a straight razor on my face 10 times in my entire life and they were all for weddings or job interviews. I hate the way I look like that. If I do shave its with the lowest setting on the beard trimmer and I still have stubble.

I love the way that stuff smells but my barber told me its full of silicone which isn't good in the long term for your hair or skin.
I have no idea if he was lying, but he gave me a beer and a playboy when he said it so I deemed him trustworthy.

I started using it about 2 months ago and I gained about an inch past what was terminal length of my beard.
It could have silicone in it... I dunno, but it seems to help the softness and the extra length must mean its protecting the hair from breakage.

I don't know anything about growing beards but I would think the longer the hairs are the softer it feels.

I'm sure its fine
I was half-kidding. I use the Old Spice 3-in-1 shampoo, body wash, shave cream stuff on my head and body. That way I only have to buy 1 bottle of crap at the store.
Then use the wife's ridiculous conditioner made from 300 year old Himalayan tree bark and purified with unicorn tears on my beard. I have no idea where she finds all her "products" or how much she spends, but I decided a long time ago that I just don't want to know .

I like that you are all worked up about dudes looking like they actually look and not working hard to have their faces look just like their female counterparts.

Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo and hot water.
I don't usually advocate stealing from babies but this works

Men have had beards far more throughout history than men have been shaving FWIW.
And my wife loves it. I usually shave it off a few times a year for practical reasons (in the hot months).

frick all of that. It would be easier to just shave.

I use this twice per week, along with the same scented oil. Works like a charm.

Only if you want to dry it out and your face. Use a beard conditioner and oil. That will greatly tame it and help keep it soft.

This. The 90's were awesome because of clean shaven men and the ones with facial hair had a simple goatee.
