Serious question: is Austin nice if you’re middle class with a family?

Seems like when I hear about cities being nice places to live, that typically means for rich people to enjoy.

Austin proper? No, not at all. But understand the MSA is like 60 miles long N-S, and probably 30-40 miles E-W. You get out in those 'burbs, Hutto, Liberty Hill, Leander, Lago, Georgetown, it's pretty nice and you can go visit anything you want to in Austin.

Austin city limits vs Austin metro area are 2 very different things

Austin and BR are similar in The fact that both State capitals they're both flagship university towns( though UT vs LSU quality of life reputation...puhleeeease )and the climate is similar

past that they're two very very different cities and areas in the topography, the economy, the arts, demographics, crime .
all quality of life

BR has an affordability advantage but there's a reason

and outside City proper there's in no comparison CentTex is 1,000 times nicer :

Right on all counts - NOW. But back in the 1960's, not much at all separated the two cities or the universities. UT's academic reputation was transformed from the 1970's through about 1990, and John Butler's mentor, Dr George Kozmetzsky, was the linchpin of that.

I lived in BR for 5 years, now I live north of Austin.

It would take more than a million dollar a year salary for me to move my family to BR.

There is no bigger shite hole that I have ever spent extensive time in than Baton Rouge.

I thought BR was paradise when I first went there as a preteen c. 1980

Of course I was coming from Jxn MS

In those Jxn was merely dull, not dangerous

Austin singlehandedly beats BR in almost every category except cost of living. The property taxes in TX cities are already high, Austin’s tax rate is on a whole different level.

If you get a chance, watch Richard Linklater’s first film, Slacker. 80’s Austin in a nutshell. Emphasis on nuts.

WWII & da plants

Fortunately, for LSU football, as Mr Cannon of Philadelphia MS moved to BR to find work, bringing his little boy Billy with him...

I would wager that some high earners (like doctors) may actually be better off in Baton Rouge.

So, as someone who just made this comparison. I am moving to Austin. It’s more than just cost of living. It’s opportunities and access as well. I am taking a small pay cut to move to a state with less taxes (from where I am at) and more growth and opportunity while still keeping my season tickets. This was a no brainer. If someone can change my mind please go for it.

Slackers was about that age group. not the original Austin art/music/hipster scene at large

Willie and the Armadillo World headquarters was a much bigger driver and influence on what Austin became/is than the 80's poser /try-hards

that was real those traditions are still the Austin "the Slackers" tried to be
the Slackers are today's homeless

So what you're saying is sometime mid last century, Baton Rouge could've been compared to Austin?

Austin is one of the best places in the country to live, Baton Rouge is one of the worst. I’ve lived in both, it ain’t even close.

Not so much. Housing costs are sky high. My son lives there. He can't afford to move with his growing family. There are homeless people and hippies galore. Austin has an amount of cool that BR might not. And the outdoors is likely better in Austin. They just aren't comparable as cities unless you think seat of state government and flagship university.

BR:

White alone (NH) 101,867 86,679 77,829 44.71% 37.77% 34.22%
Black or African American alone (NH) 113,478 124,542 121,799 49.81% 54.27% 53.55%
Native American or Alaska Native alone (NH) 376 397 382 0.17% 0.17% 0.17%
Asian alone (NH) 5,940 7,469 7,294 2.61% 3.25% 3.21%

Austin:

White (Non-Hispanic) 47.7% 47.1% 48.7% 56.4% 61.7% 73.4% 86.6%
Hispanic or Latino 32.5% 32.5% 35.1% 28.2% 23.0% 14.5% n/a
Asian 8.4% 8.9% 6.2% 4.5% 3.0% 0.2% 0.1%

All of the Asians clearly gives Austin a cerebral edge. You will learn quickly to avoid California transplants.
