When I was younger, I always quietly condemned head shrinks because it seemed to me so many of them were quick to prescribe mood altering drugs to those who didn't always need them. Seems like every kid I knew growing up who was put on ritalin or other ADD meds ended up in bad shape, and I think my opinion of docs like this was kind of forged here. Maturing a little bit has changed the way I looked at them, and I now know a lot of people who have been able to lead completely normal lives due to help from psychiatrists.

Now I think it's me that's having the issue. Maybe. I don't know. It might be nothing. Kind of feel like I'd like to talk to somebody but almost every doctor is on a referral basis, or can't work you into an appointment until 3 months down the road. Plus I'm scared to death they'll put me on some kind of medication that will just turn me into an unfeeling zombie.

Anybody else ever feel like this? Am I a crazy person or should I just shut the frick up and get over myself?

Definitely go see someone. There's always counselors out there that are taking patients.

It helps a lot. If there wasn't such a mental health stigma in this country, there'd be a lot let mass shootings and suicides. People are afraid of what others will think of them if they go, and don't want to ask off work for mental health reasons. The guy I went to worked around my work schedule.

Call some therapist in the area and find one that can get you in. They see people like this everyday and will know if you need time working through something or some other type help. Just call and get in and be honest so they can help.

You can call almost any counselor yourself and make an appt.

Most family practice doctors will prescribe you AD meds.

Antidepressants aren't the cure-all for mental health issues. Therapy and medicine is a great combination. Also taking the right medicine that interacts with your body chemistry.

I had to try 3 medicines before I go the one that worked best.

Anyone who questions a person for seeing a mental health professional in this day and age is just demonstrating their ignorance.

They're a great short-term solution, though, to get your mind re-oriented.

It's more common these days than you realize. Therapists are for "wusses" or "crazy people"

See the moron BabyTac above. Guys especially are seen as less masculine if they go see one. Most of this country would greatly benefit from seeing one.

See, let me catch someone like BabyTac when I'm off my meds. Not pretty. Someone would likely get the "hobby" of picking up teeth.

That's why your doctor should be working with you to find the right medication type and dosage.

You may also want to see a counselor in addition to the doctor to talk about your emotional wellbeing.

My biggest fear in going to see someone is that they'll tell me I need them, and that they'll somehow cut me off from the feelings you're supposed to feel. There has to be some common ground between getting emotional about something and getting TOO emotional about it, if that makes sense. I keep focusing on how shitty it would be if I felt far less sad/happy/etc about something. After you've taken meds, how do you know the difference?

**edit - I didn't see the post above before I made this one... didn't want you think I was just saying the same thing over and over.

I honestly can't remember. You probably don't. However, when the alternative is tasting the barrel of a pistol, you adapt.

Best thing I ever did for my OCD/anxiety: cut back on caffeine, run/jog 4-5 days a week. Alcohol and cigarettes in true moderation. Cut back on daily drinking and rarely drink more than 1 glass of wine or 2 beers a day, 1-2 cigarettes a day, average. There are days/weeks where I don't smoke at all, but when I get the urge I'll enjoy a smoke.

Just a heads up, therapists can't/won't prescribe you medication. A clinical psychologist or your internal medicine doctor will have to prescribe.

Like I said earlier, it's trial and error until you find the best medication and dosage for you.

I tried Zoloft and Paxil before sticking with Celexa.

It also depends on if your problems are mainly OCD, depression, or anxiety. Each medicine is geared more towards a certain thing.

I know exactly what you're feeling. For me, Celexa gives me the least side effects for the most positives.

Zoloft gave me a lot of side effects, especially sexually. Killed my sex drive (at 21 years old)

Paxil just made me feel weird.

If you have any other questions, I'll try to answer them the best I can.

It doesn't work like that. Unless you're bipolar and on some really strong anti convulsants or anti psychotics. But it that case, you probably need your emotions dampened down a bit

As far as anti depressants, they don't make you a zombie. But you may have to be patient with side effects and medication adjustments

Eta yes psychiatrists are in short supply most places and there will be a wait. I do recommend going through a psychiatrist for meds though because they are so much more knowledgeable about brain chemistry and what will work best for your symptoms

And I think a counselor is always good. Even on meds if your thinking is fricked up you won't be right

Exactly. Therapy helps make sense of your actions, and helps you stop the lines of thoughts.
