I've heard that same story quite a bit over the last few years

Depends on the school. At all of them you'll be lower priority because you're not parishioner or catholic, but the better ones will be harder to get in.

But sending a significant donation should help.

Perhaps some catholic schools but not others. I moved to the area in 1993 and started attending church at St. George immediately and started giving to both the school and church right away. 2 years later my daughter did not get in and she attended kindergarten at Parkview Baptist. She did get accepted for first grade and finished there but had she not it was going to be Parkview all the way.
