Since there is a thread about Ascension public schools on here, I figured I'd start a thread about this.

My wife and I are currently in the market for a new home and we have a small child. We both went to public school but we really want to stay in Baton Rouge. Most of my friends went to BR catholic schools and most of their kids do as well.

We have considered Zachary and Ascension public schools as an alternative but like I said before, we really want to stay in BR. How hard would it be for us to get into BR catholic schools being that neither of us are catholic?

Thanks in advance for any advice or input!

If they're super good at sports they can be atheist for all the school cares

But really, just say you are and pay the tuition?

Not being a parishioner is going to make it tough. Can you swing donating enough for a new gym or academic building?

Sacred Heart accepts kids/families of any faith

Your tuition may be more, but it also feeds into Catholic high and St. Joe

Edit: tuition will be more compared to parishioner Catholic family. They would also have priority if there are a lot of applications compared to available spots

Probably depends on the school. They usually place priority on in parish, both Catholic, alum, etc. Also, monthly donations help.

From what I have observed in the past few years is that getting into "most" not "all" catholic schools are wayyyyy easier now than it was in say the 90's. Reason is because of the large amount of ppl that moved to ascension and/or send their kids to central and Zachary schools.

Schools like St Aloysius and st George are still gonna have a big waiting list.

Pretty easy with a checkbook unless there is a wait list

I would say the same.

St. Jude might be an option. My friend's kids go/went there. The older girls are at St. Joseph's now and their youngest has been accepted into Catholic for next year.

I know several people who sent their kids to Sacred Heart and were happy with it.

Also consider St. James and Trinity (Episcopal) but their tuition will be higher.

You were probably waiting because you're dumb, therefore, your offspring probably are as well.

Depends on the school. St. George, Our Lady of Mercy, and St. Alouysis will be difficult because of the sheer amount of applicants they get. As others have said, you'll be lower on the priority list. However, other parishes aren't quite as large and you'll end up having an easier time. I'd check which school is closest to your home first. All of the schools do a good job of educating kids but being close to the school and the kids your kids will go to school with has it's benefits.

It has more to do with the Catholic schools expanding in the last decade.

You'll just be lower on the list. But it would help to live within the boundaries of the parish as you'd have a better shot.

If you're looking at Aloysius your chances wouldn't be good. Probably better at Mercy, George, Jude, STM, and MBS.

They have an admission policy/priority list that is easy to find.. you will be dead last if you aren't catholic and not a member of the church.. it takes more money than you'd think to override the policy..

I'm referring to the Aloysius, st George, mercy and st Jude schools.. others mat be easier but I believe MBS is getting tougher as well

For kinder you won't be able to get in to the bigger schools. I tend to think that's not a bad thing-I like the 2 section per grade schools because kids don't get "lost" and it's way more of a family feel. 4 sections of each grade in elementary school is crazy. All the schools in the diocese have to loosely follow the same curriculum. The difference will be in school size, class size, admin, and teachers.

I moved my family to zachary for the schools and now just a few years later they all go to private school. Moving here was a horrible mistake. The schools are ran like a prison. Zachary and their schools are becoming very trashy.
