MONROE, La. (KNOE) - A bat infestation has forced University of Louisiana at Monroe faculty members to close Sugar Hall.
Dr. Ken Alford is the interim dean for the College of Health Sciences. He says they discovered the bats a month ago. He says he and other members were coming out of the building around five in the evening, and that is when they saw bats streaming out of the building's vents.
"It is a nuisance more than anything else right now," Alford said. "Once they're in, they are hard to get rid of, and they can fit through the smallest cracks."
Alford says there thousands of bats. He says they immediately called a bat eradication team. Since bats are mammals, they have to relocated and not exterminated.

Bats have been an issue for years at ULM. We ran into a colony after sneaking into the grandstand at Malone when I was there about 10 years ago.
Pretty cool to see.

Do people still consider ULM to be a real university?

Bats are one of the world’s most misunderstood animals.

I believe Texas A&M had a problem with them when they were trying to demolish their stadium.

Bats are your friend.
ETA: not when they are living inside your dwelling, but when they live near your dwelling.

I'm sure that wasn't on their radar.

Ugh. I have to deal with stupid bats at work
At least they are cute when I go remove them from someone’s apt.

Solution: release larger, more aggressive bats to feast on the original bats.

We captured a bunch of them in the ceiling of Hemphill hall when I was taking Mammalogy there 20+ years ago.

They’re still there. I worked for the football team and those SOBs were always flying in and out and we’d find dead ones down the ramp that the away team would take to get to the field

What I never knew was this part

Aren’t rats mammals too? We can kill them can’t we?
