Actually isn't Firebird #1 and Firebird #2 Gas Monkey cars or did they just sell them on before restoring them? I know Gas Monkey found them and bought them.
quote:
Originally bought by Gas Monkey Garage for $70,000, the Firebirds were sold for $650,000, after each had been the subject of that ground-up restoration, led by Jason Aker, a concours restoration expert brought on board to oversee the project. Serial #’s 100001 and 100002 are both factory show cars, as evidenced by the trim tags which read “Show1” for the No. 1 car and “Show4” for the No. 2 car, significant when factory show cars do not usually survive. Pontiac’s first Firebird is this 326 Convertible, presented in its original Regimental Red with cruise control, deluxe interior package in red and a very rare floor-mounted clock. Car #2 is a four-speed HO Coupe in Silverglaze and is also the first High Output car built with a factory-mounted tachometer, Rally II wheels, tilt column and deluxe black interior.

Yea I was surprised at some of the prices. When they came out, they were around 150k I think. Now theyre double that and some more. I guess thats the nature of the car game right now. Its definitely at a peak
I think one went over $400k last year

Gas Monkey had a vendor booth there last year. Heading out there all day Saturday and will post pics.

Was wondering when you'd fire up this thread.
Would have done some nefarious things to get those three.

This reminds me of last years 3 Corvettes that were all Vin #1s. These two are sold as a package deal

You looking to buy anything or just going to have fun and see all the cars?

These things are beautiful cars. Their value has skyrocketed since production stopped.
Ford is coming out with a 2017 GT, fwiw:

They did not do well at Daytona last year

I assume Rick Hendrick will be the top bidder on these.

The valuation of the Ford GT always fascinated me. From $150k new, to around $100k used, to $300k+ all in the span of about 10-12 years. Pretty interesting upswing for such a short amount of time.
With that said I wonder if the release of the Ecoboost GT tempers the climbing value of the V8 version.

Those Firebirds were on Gas Monkey- bought for $70K (that was the public transaction on the show, anyway), restored and sold for $650K. It will be interesting to see what they are going for today.
eta: I guess I was too slow typing, as this is being discussed.

Did the 2005 models do well? I know they're considered an excellent car, but I don't know what their racing background looks like.
Obviously I'm familiar with the GT40.

If I won the lottery I would be all over these auctions for classic cars. I'd have the baddest garage.

Apparently they were auctioned in 2008 as a group my the Mecum folks. Didn't know that.

There aren't many weekend events more enjoyable than classic car shows IMO, particularly if you have someone that knows what the hell they're looking at (not me).

$1.65 mil for the three Corvettes, purchased by you guessed it, Rick Hendrick.

I don't think they ever raced those models. IIRC, 2016 was the first year Ford got into European racing since the late 60's
