Okay so lets say a co-worker, who has to finish his part of a project before it can move on calls into work to say he will not be coming in today because his mother-in-law is in town and they all stayed up late last night talking. Is that a legit reason not to come into work? The employer allows people to sort of work their own hours as long as work gets done and you can use you vacation hours anytime you want.

This particular guy will likely use hours, he has accumulated, but wouldn't it be best just to say some shite like "I must have caught some type of stomach virus" instead of "I stayed up too late talking with my wife and mother-in-law"? What type of shite is that?

Anyone ever heard someone taking off for some stupid arse reason?

So you are allowed to use hours for whatever you want and you think its better to lie?

This is a good point, but I guess it has to do with more of the fact he is stopping others from moving on. I guess its just the last second call in that is frustrating.

It is an odd excuse for sure.

Everyone around my office just sends an email out saying "I'm not feeling well so I'm going to take a sick day to rest"... never really questioned.

Nobody is saying it will propel his career to new places, but that being said, he's his own man using his own PTO. Either push the project off or work around it.

Sounds like he told the truth rather than making up a fake stomach virus like co-workers do.

If the same effect either way is that he is taking time off why would you prefer that he lie to you? Should he be scared of his coworkers and bosses? If the real issue is that he is taking time off at all while the project needs to be finished then that alone be the issue.

A lot of the time I don't even give a reason unless it comes up conversationally. I just say that I need x time off. It isn't jefe's business. It's my time to take off. I don't need excuses.
