They went through way more preventative measures that the poor basterds that flew all those machines that won the war ever got!

The Super Fortress was the most advanced aircraft of her day. We actually spent more money on its development than we did on the atomic bomb.

Love the sound of those engines. Aluminum body. Great aircraft that I wish I could ride along.

I do believe it helped save my father, and millions of other sailors and soldiers, from the grim task of invading the Japanese home islands.

There were two specific ones that cinched the deal:
Enola Gay & Bockscar
I saw Fifi fly over my house years ago.
I was cutting my grass on my little Snapper rider like Forrest.
It was an honor to share my airspace.

Got to fly in a B-17 a few years back. What an incredible experience. That plane is very 'light.' When we hit turbulence, we didn't bounce hard up and down. We just kind of floated around.
The pilot actually opened the bomb bay doors while in mid-flight. The only places in the plane we couldn't go were the rear tail gunner spot and the ball turret. Got some great video from all other spots on the plane.

Fifi, currently the only flying B 29, was at the BR airport a couple of years. I got to see it take off and land and toured it afterwards. What an experience.
A little side note... There is a story outlined in the plane that Colonel Tibbetts, the Enola Gay pilot actually piloted Fifi on a flight and his co pilot was another Air Force pilot...his grandson !!! Now that was an historic flight !

Like many, I wouldn't be reading these posts if not for the B-29. Dad was staging for the invasion and ended up in the occupational force.
Going to see the Enola next month to pay respects.

I would hate to be the poor bastard that had to polish it up, though....

Little known fact. When the Japanese surrendered, there was a flight of B-29s in the air headed for Tokyo. If negotiations had broken down, they were going to drop incendiary bombs on the city again. They turned around mid flight when they got word the treaty was signed.
A guy in my church was a radio operator on that flight. He flew on B-29s, B-17s, B-24s, and DC-10s. In both Europe and the Pacific theaters. Amazing he made it through the entire war based on the odds.
Need to get him to do an AMA on reddit or something. Not many of his generation left. He is 97, but in failing health.
