Don't the older planes still do it manually? Like the E-2 and the S-3's?

True, but you still have to do it manual in a worst case situation.

I have a AF buddy who flew in Vietnam. He landed 2x on a carrier and is happy he never had to do it again.

BTW, he accounted for roughly 1% of all confirmed ATA kills during the Vietnam war. He shot down 2 out of the 214 confirmed.

Really? Are they retired from service completely or just carrier ops?

The S-3 was retired from front-line fleet service aboard aircraft carriers by the US Navy in January 2009, with its missions being assumed by other platforms such as the P-3C Orion, SH-60 Seahawk, and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Several examples continue to be flown by Air Test and Evaluation Squadron THREE ZERO (VX-30) at Naval Base Ventura County / NAS Point Mugu, California for range clearance and surveillance operations[1] on the NAVAIR Point Mugu Range, and a single example is operated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the NASA Glenn Research Center.

And the USAF F-15s eat Hornets for lunch, too (in both BVR and up close dogfighting) My wife is Navy so we have had this discussion before...

I have a few friends who are Eagle drivers who talk about dogfighting Hornets...they talked about how they smoked them in all scenarios, including guns only. They loved going against multiple bogies (2v5, 4v10, etc.). The Hornet (Legacy or Super) doesn't have and can't sustain the energy in those types of fights against the likes of the Eagle. There is a reason the Eagle is 100+ to 0...

I'd like to see F-14s and F-15s go head to head. I know the tomcat is retired but one can wish.

a lot of it depends on the pilot, I know of a lot of VN era guys to have gone 1 v. 4(F-4/F-16,) and send the newbies home crying for their mamas, phantom v. Tomcat too

the f14-f15 is before my time, but the guys still around that worked on said tomcat said it was a bonerific time watching them things explode off the deck of a carrier.

they also said witnessing a f14 break the sound barrier will make you wet youself.

Yet at Top Gun in Fallon, Navy pilots in an F-18 would better the Air Force in F-22. 3 out of 5 times.

you don't fight at those speeds, subsonic, as a matter of fact, in a dogfight, it's more power to weight, turning ability, tactics, and knowing the strengths/weaknesses of your airplane and your adversary's

yes, they dogfight at TopGun, and usually the 18's win. except as a few have pointed out, when the raptors get the hornets at range.

yeah i wasnt trying to make that point, just how fast the 14 was. the 14 with an average pilot vs an 15 or 16, i dont see the 14 taking that one.

ive seen 16's take off and go straight vertical on a dime, the 14 or 18 isnt doing that. the instructors at Top Gun fly 15 and 16's. they are the real fn deal.
