I failed emissions. I know the obd code (p0421) and the listed reasons for the obd code for my make. If I take it to a mechanic, dealer or otherwise, and pay for a diagnostics, will they tell me anything more specific than the obd code and potential causes publishes for the obd code?

I don't want to pay $115 for them to just tell me what the obd code "usually" means.

I think that you can just put some STP in the gas and it will be fine.

IIRC, that's either an o2 sensor or bad cat. How many miles do you have?

Changed both 02 sensors. 138000 miles. Pretty sure it's the cat because the 02 sensor volTage on the rear is flucutting as much as the front sensor.

You can get an aftermarket cat for cheap and have an exhaust shop weld it on for you.

I'd just go to another place though

Have you taken it somewhere like autozone to let them dump the codes? They may be able to tell you something more specific....

Bank 2 catalyst efficiency below threshold. You are dead on if the downstream switch as much as the the upstream then it has failed and will need to be replaced.

On another note, aftermarket cats are much cheaper but also much worse at their job.

What kind of car is it?

2006 Mitsubishi Lancer. Im only keeping it for about 6-7 months, so just need one good enough to pass inspection, not one that will last long term.

Get it changed, run it around a week or 2 and make sure it will pass emissions and then park it if you can.
