But as the mother of a nearly nonverbal autistic child, Coleman also knew that she needed to be there for Chase in case he needed help. She often scouted out racecourses ahead of time, noting where the lanky teenager might get lost or confused, as he often did.

A few weeks ago, her worst fears came true when Chase - who was running in a meet in Rochester, New York, with his team from Corcoran High School - was assaulted by a stranger in the middle of a race. Coleman had been waiting for him near the reservoir in Cobb's Hill Park, at a part of the course where runners would come down a hill - but Chase never appeared. So as she often would do at meets, she went looking for him.

And of course the assailant was not arrested or charged.

Hate to be that guy, but if he "often" got lost or confused, shouldn't someone have been following him during the race?

I'm sorry. But was the assailant who assaulted the teen arrested? The story says he was not.

I agree. But that does not excuse someone assaulting him.

How many times did this kid get lost? Sounds like bad parenting.

I mean since the assailant played the "I was scared" card without any rational justification. That seems to be a get out of jail free card

So a an a-hole white guy pushed a nice black kid? This deserves attention on account of their respective races?

Allow me to go locate a few thousand stories of an a-hole black kid assaulting a nice white guy. BRB.

Yes. I have a son on the Autism Spectrum, and his sense of direction is also terrible, and he will not ask for help if he gets lost. Unless he ran this route often, someone should have been with him.
