The Bees Knees is a must. It's a great tapas restaurant with a good draft selection. The avocado chop chop is the best item on the menu.

Village deli is a cool little dive type restaurant, the canal tours are decent if it isn't stifling hot. There's a few decent bars downtown although their names escape me right now. You can also go up to Aiken, it's definitely a different feel than Augusta with a couple decent restaurants and bars downtown. Honestly, compared to most cities it's size, Augusta is pretty lacking, but there are things to do.

James Brown was buried in a gold coffin but afterward they would say where he was buried because his 'fans' could dig him up, toss him out of the coffin, and get the gold.

And somehow Columbia County (suburb of Augusta) is the fastest growing area in the state of Georgia.

Any cool things to do in Augusta or surrounding areas?

I live 15 minutes across the Savannah River from Augusta.

Be careful to know what areas to avoid..even during the day.

Augusta National is obviously the biggest draw of Augusta. Broad Street is a bust for the most part. Other than the statue of James Brown and the haunted pillar, the only other thing to do downtown is walk along the Riverwalk.

I started to add that there were some cool spots to eat/drink downtown but didn't. Augusta held much more appeal to me when I was a teen...I'm 44 now, though, so the days of Regency Mall have long gone. Hell, I wouldn't venture on that side of town now unless absolutely necessary.

I'm currently living here for school. Others have given some good suggestions. Go to The Hive downtown and get a couple flights, they've got a pretty large beer selection there and the food ain't bad. World of Beer on Washington Rd just opened. I've yet to make it there, but I've heard good things. Washington is a clusterfrick for the most part, but there's a lot of different places to eat on it. Someone mentioned Takosushi in Surrey Center, that place is the bomb. Sole downtown opened up last summer and it's pretty good for sushi as well. People have started hanging out there late night, they've got a pretty large bar. If you like to shoot pool, Blue Sky and Stillwater are cool places to go. Southbound Smokehouse on Central is fairly new and has some pretty solid food there, and good beers to check out. Ultimate hole in the wall hangout is Helga's pub on Central a couple blocks away from Southbound. It's smoky as hell, but a real chill place to hang out, and they've got billiards there as well. I'm assuming from your username that you're younger? If you're looking for a Friday/Saturday hangout, go to the Indian Queen on Wrightsboro Rd. It's where a lot of the younger crowd and the med/dental/pt students hang.

If you like to go to shows, Riverwalk Amphitheater, Sky City, and Southbound will have bands play. We don't get awesome bands as frequently as you'd see at The Varsity in Baton Rouge though. Athens always has some dope shows rolling through there, it's about an hour and 45 minutes away. Gotta have friends living out there to make that a feasible trip though.

And as far as this place being a complete shithole, it's hit or miss. It's old as hell, but lots of new places are popping up everywhere and it's starting to get better. Or maybe I've just become used to this place. You'll see super nice houses and neighborhoods literally a block away from some shady places. Lake Olmstead is nice to just go chill by some water, or like some said earlier the Savannah Rapids Pavilion is there to go see the river and canal. You can rent kayaks up there and float the canal. Or if you've got your own, do whatever the hell you want and go fish on the river. You can also reach the canal through Eisenhower park which is probably gonna be closer to where you'll be anyway.

And if you're gonna be here this fall, hit me up and let's catch a game together. It's kind of lonely up here in fricking dawg country. I have seen a couple other LSU decals on cars in my first two years here though
