If any of your kids have similar Aug or Sept Bdays, did you start them when they were 4 and let them be the youngest in the class or hold them out and let them be one of the oldest the next year, Im curious to what you did, how it worked and if you would go back and change it if you could... thanks

Boy or girl?

It does make a difference.

My parents started me and held me back. I'm very glad they did because I would have been very young for my grade

ETA my birthday is in September

IMO, wait until they are 5, not 4. Read the book outliers, it spends a lot of time on this very topic.

I have a September birthday and I started kindergarten at 4. I was always the youngest in my class. I turned out fine.

Do you have a boy or a girl?

PreK dude...turning 4 they should have a PreK to go to...not regular Kindergarten...and yes you should send the kid...from the social benefits alone it is a good thing...plus they will get that jump on reading...

i misread OP...send em...i have an august bday and graduated at 17...wont hurt em...

I've got one like that and I'm going forward.

This whole mentality that my kid can't be the youngest in the class is creating ridiculousness. I'd prefer schools set hard cutoffs on each end, and that parents should have the burden to show why their kids should be excluded from the cut off, and not the other way around.

I don't know, I was relatively young for my age compared to most kids in my grade, April bday. Seemed like I was one of the last ones each year.

In kindergarten my teacher told my parents that when I looked at her I made her feel stupid, so I guess I got that going for me

My son was within a week of the cutoff. We decided to hold him back. I'm glad we did. The oldest kid in the class has a decided leg up versus the youngest kid in the class in almost every way.

Agreed but the maturity level for the girl would have to be outstanding for me to consider letting her be in the older class.

Hold them back, it's better to be old than young from a maturity stand point.

It's not like they will be stunted, many kids will be their age.

I don't see why someone wouldn't hold back, it delays the speed that a child has to mature to much more healthy levels.

I'd send her, holding her back basically delays her whole life a year. That's a year later that she'll have to wait to graduate high school, a year later that she'll have to wait to graduate college, and a year later that she'll have to wait to start her career.

That's a year that you never get back, and enough to make me send my kid early if I'm ever in your situation.
