For those that have att, do you use the wifi box it comes with or your own router?

Forgot we had a tech board now.

You have to use their gateway as a modem, but you can (and probably should) use your own router for WiFi, which is simple to do. Just have to put the router in DMZ Plus mode.

Also, Tech Board.

Just trying to reduce the bill(we have our own router we could use). It charges $7 a month for the box. Already returning one of the wireless cable boxes that was for a tv we no longer use. Baby is on the way so we are trying to cut as many easy expenses as possible.

Well, it depends on how many wireless clients you have and the size of your house. If you've got a laptop or two, plus phones and maybe a tablet, and a smart TV or two, and printer and a game console and a roku all using WiFi, you'll probably want something with a little more emphasis on wireless performance. Generally those gateways are crappy in terms of signal power and client load, but this is mostly coming from my experience with them a few years ago. They may have improved greatly since then.

If you want wireless n or ac and/or want to use the 5 GHZ band you need to supply your own router, which you configure as a wireless access point. You disable wireless on the ATT gateway when you do this.

So instead of 330 channels that nobody watches you would have 430 channels that nobody watches. With a Roku you could have more than a 1000 channels that nobody watches.

Are all 20 of those watched channels available live through Roku? Legit question. I would love to cancel UVerse.

I dropped Dish earlier this year and went with over-the-air plus Roku. I'm using Windows Media Center for the program guide and for DVR functions. It works great and I don't miss Dish at all. I'm serving three TVs with a pair of HD Homerun Dual tuners on the network. I already had Amazon Prime but I did sign up for Hulu Plus so my monthly outlay is the princely sum of $7.99. The Roku does not stream local channels. Delivering uncompressed MPEG2 video from the tuners does require a wired ethernet connection.
