Atlas 5 (bottom piece/main booster) is a derivative of the rocket that put John Glenn into space.

lived down the beach from there, in Satellite Beach.
The rockets were always a lot louder.
I thought the shuttles would be the loudest, but the rockets were way louder.

Started the video 3 seconds before liftoff.
That camera mounted on the side was absolutely awesome to watch.

Well duh. They faked the moon landing, you think they can't mock something like this up?
Open your eyes, man.

Anyone get a close look at the emblem near the top of the rocket? I looked kind of like an eye of the tiger but I couldn't get a good look at it.
Edit to add: I found a picture I could zoom in on. I still couldn't make out what it was but I could tell it was an eye of a tiger. Must have been my purple and gold colored glasses.

I have been lucky enough to spend time in the facility in Decatur, AL where these are built. ULA is quite the facility:

as amazing as it still is to watch those things launch. I always find myself wondering what the hell kind of camera can hold that thing in frame for so long. The dang thing was in orbit and the ground cam still had a visual on it, that's a hell of a camera!

what happens to the rockets and the payload once they've done their job? Just waste the shite and let it stay up in space?
Seems like they would save enough fuel for all these parts for re entry with chute landings in the ocean for recovery.

quote:There's a tracking device on the Atlas that communicates telemetry to a receiver on the camera which keeps it trained on the rocket. Not unlike an F-16 getting "tone" on an enemy aircraft.
