Polarizing boutique owner throws in the towel

Virginia Highland coffee shop and boutique, Henry & June, will close for good on August 30th. The business, which opened just over two years ago, occupied one of Bill Hallman's former spaces at 784 North Highland Avenue.

Henry & June was owned by James "Jim" Chambers and his wife Camryn Park, or as so eloquently stated on the businesses website, "Henry & June is the lovechild of Jim Chambers and Camryn Park."

The boutique and coffee shop announced its closure via its Instagram account yesterday.

For those who may not know, Jim Chambers is the entitled grandson of Anne Cox Chambers, whose father created Cox Enterprises. Today, Cox Enterprises owns dozens of media and business properties including the AJC, WSB-TV, Manheim, Kelley Blue Book, AutoTrader and Valpak.

While Chambers claims it is in fact his wife who runs Henry & June, his poor behavior and the causes he supports have definitely impacted the business, in the most negative ways possible. (Chambers is also part owner in EAV Barbell, a gym specializing in weightlifting that opened this past spring.)

According to his Twitter handle (@jccfergie), Chambers supports / is associated with the following groups / causes: #DontCallTheCops. Organizer. Marxist. Free Palestine. Sport. Weightlifting. Cannabis. Polyglot. Sex+. Proud Papa.

"K.G.", a former customer and Yelp.com user, left the following review on August 13th:

"I will not be a patron of this coffee shop anymore.

I'm not going write some scathing review because honestly the coffee is some of the best I've ever had but I just can't support this business any longer. I am a Police Officer's wife and I wont spend any more of my husband's (or my) hard earned money there when the owner's husband has called Police Officers "pigs" to their faces. I just can't and won't tolerate that kind of immaturity or disrespect. I'd rather walk a few blocks out of my way for a caffeine fix.

Whether you like it or not your actions and attitude outside of your business reflects on your business. Keep that in mind."

The incident the user is referring to is when Chambers was recently observed at the family friendly Grant Park Farmers Market walking up to cops and calling them "PIGS."

More recently it was also revealed that Chambers, while high on an unknown substance, "sleepwalked" naked outside of his posh Grant Park home before he was detained by Atlanta Police.

Chambers recounts the "ordeal" on his Facebook page:

Chambers' antics have made him a constant target of ridicule on the popular website reddit. The following are just two examples of some of the comments left on the site directed at him / about him:

reddit user "KomboSauce"
"Your house, your boutique, your activism, your place in this community, and everything about you is an effect of your privilege. You bought it all. And you're not even remotely grateful for any of it, because you use your privilege to support being an abuser. You hurt your family, you're hurting your neighborhood, and you're hurting our city. All without any consequence."

reddit user "imdabes"
"Someone should put a banner in his front lawn that reads: "Take whatever you want - we're marxists and we #DONTCALLTHECOPS"

Surprisingly, Chambers does frequently have dialogue with his "haters" as seen by one of his recent responses below.

"Above all else, leave Cam, and any movement, out of this. Leave Henry and June out; that's her shop, not mine. Come at me, come at my polyamory, come at my family's money, which I give away constantly, and to which I have VERY little access, because they don't like me much."

I can't imaging why Chambers' own family would not like him... or can I?

I think it's a dumb thing for him to do but yes, he has every right to refuse service to anyone. Thing is, he won't get sued for it like those idiots who sue the bakers or florists because they feel discriminated against. Go somewhere else if you aren't welcome, it's that easy.

Damn, on reddit poster knocked it out of the park.

Nope. You just don't get it. Your house, your boutique, your activism, your place in this community, and everything about you is an effect of your privilege. You bought it all. And you're not even remotely grateful for any of it, because you use your privilege to support being an abuser. You hurt your family, you're hurting your neighborhood, and you're hurting our city. All without any consequence. Except maybe for this thread, and any additional public shaming that's coming your way. You're just an a-hole. And you're not even an interesting one. Most of us who live in Grant Park, O4W, Kirkwood, etc - we work hard. Most of us were raised in middle class or lower class families, and through a lot of hard work we finally got to a place where we could buy a home, raise a family, maybe have a small business, and take some small steps to make life better. And then you come along, and you try to make things worse. You fund anti-cop protests. You harass the cops, in public. You distribute propaganda that leads to distrust and hostility between the police and the most vulnerable members of this community. I guess if things turn bad here, and the community becomes less safe because you got bored with being a do-nothing trust fund kid who wanted to be a "man of the people," you can pack up and move out. You can go back to Brooklyn or some other trust fund community that's kinder to people like you. We don't have this luxury. If things turn south here, and we wind up with real crime like in St. Louis/Ferguson or Baltimore as a result of the unrest you're trying to foment, we're on the hook for it. Not you. We didn't win the sperm lottery. Billions of dollars haven't landed on us by virtue of birth, allowing us to spend our days dicking-off with college protester kids. This is why people are angry. This is why you're probably going to wind up being covered by Gawker or Breitbart, why your boutique's customers are going vanish once they learn about your connection to it, and why you've been cut out of Barbell and why local artists like the Black Lips are starting to call you out. People have been robbed, stores have been burgled, and people have been hurt even in Virginia Highlands. And you're going to act like cops are the enemy? How many people who frequent stores along Highland are going to want to shop at your place when they find out you're trying to make them less safe? frick it. This is probably wasted on you. Someone stupid enough to hide behind his wife and use her "tears" as a shield, and demand that people leave every aspect of his privileged life alone so he can keep being a cancer on the community is probably too stupid to understand why people are so sick of his bullshite. But I tried. And of course you're "always open ears/emails/phones or coffee tables." You're an unemployed do-nothing trust fund turd. But thanks for the laugh. Instead of using that money to fund college kid protests and actions that make us all less safe, why don't you put some poor black kids through school, or renovate some houses? Be more like Jimmy Carter, or Bruce Wayne. If you hate yourself and your family, and want to rebel agaisnt them in the most tired fashion possible (Marx? Being a swinger? Are you trapped in the 50's, lol?) - maybe try to find a way to do it that doesn't sink our property values, hurt our kids' schools, or endanger us. Or grow the frick up and stop hating yourself and your family so much. Whatever they've done to you, it's not your fault. But it's definitely not ours, so stop making us pay for whatever angst and lack of imagination that's making you act like such an obnoxious prick.
